Yikes Yikes YikesI don't recall a MN victory over a #1 ever I don't remember...ever... a signature victory like this Maybe most impressive: the will and ability to EFFECTIVELY address the weaknesses from the Stanford match. I did not think that MN was capable of passing as they did in the first three sets. It's always been one of our Achilles heels. MN now knows they CAN beat anyone, not just compete. Like Shaff in the postgame interview I don't really have the words. GOPHER PRIDEeven if you are a millennial 9/14/2019 #8 Minnesota beat #1 Stanford at Penn State. 27-25 27-25 23-25 25-20.

Texas went on to win a championship that year. 2011 #11 MN 3-0 TX #4 MN 3-0 TX 2012 #14 MN 3-1 TX #4 MN 1-3 TX Minnesota is now 5-6 against Texas and 1-0 in 5-set matches.

Wow, that was pre-Hugh (I am OLD!). LOL Also, apparently TX wasn't #1 either At the risk of going down a rabbit trail, haven't we also defeated Nebraska while they were #1 sometime in the past decade?

I have always been a huge Shaffmaster fan. What a match! Really happy for her. Hope she can stay healthy all year. She has the type of size, physicality, and all around game that can draw the attention of National Team coaches. She can end up one of the best setters in school history.
I am excited for this season!

I just want to give huge props to Calissa Minatee, who has only been mentioned once for her outstanding play last night.
Great to see her slide development and some pretty clutch play down the stretch in set 5.

So now that the team has improved (a lot!) and the coaching has improved I think its time for the fans to improve.
In TX, when the announcer says the name of the starters in the starting lineup the fans repeat the last name. So like "Setter from New Castle Indian, Melanie Shaffmaster." We would say "Shaffmaster!" After Pheobe Awoleye is introduced, we yell "Ah-wol-a-ya" and so forth.
I've decided to stand up and bounce when cheering for a Grote kill or block. I realize that's not for everybody.
I found myself yelling - "Keep your foot on the gas" many times during the TX match. I think that's a keeper. No more coasting when Minnesota has the lead.
I'm open for more ideas.
I also think fans should celebrate the coaches and players on this fabulous team instead of complaining about the ones that are gone. Be a better Gopher fan.

Like everyone else, I'm still on a high today from last night's triumph. Also, my optimism for this season is way up. I realize there will be some dips ahead, but here are my reasons for optimism:
- Shaffmaster is healthy (and focused). I would argue she was our best player this weekend. - Wucherer is maturing. Her level of play this weekend had some ups and downs, but I would argue was more level than in the past. - Hanson is showing the promise we all hoped we would see. - Grote hasn't been at last year's level yet, but when she does get back to that level, look out! - Middles - it does seem that there is more of an emphasis on setting the middle. Calissa has been dynamic and Phoebe has been such a blocking wall. - Our "littles" - Z has shown great energy, now will the passing rise to the level of her defense? Thibault's addition adds to the strength of our backcourt. - Chemistry - this is hard to measure, but it seems everyone agrees this is much better than last year. - Depth - we have it, now the question is "will Cook use it?" We have a capable OH and OPP on the bench.

The other thing I notice was the gophers were smashing like Wucherer's game ending hit. I don't think we miss last years transfer. Go Julia Hanson.
