I've brought up a very valid point that no one will be able to bring up a valid counter-point to, other than things like "well ... because that's how volleyball does it". Redshirts should not travel in college sports. All sports, all levels. Should be an NCAA rule. "Redshirts" travel with the team because the 'redshirt' can be removed at any time; because of injury or performance, the player 'redshirting' can be called on to enter a match or game, 'burning' the redshirt. These days, that probably more unusual that it used to be, but I expect it still happens from time to time. This right here... BTW for next year, Chloe and Stella are the two setters. Does Minn have a 3rd 2025 coming in?

Even though this is technically wrong (you don't have to apply for anything with the NCAA, with a regular redshirt ... you simply are given 5 years to participate in 4 seasons, from the git go), I wasn't talking about anything with the NCAA. I was talking about players who purposefully are not playing this year, even though we could use them, in order to have four more years to align with the 2025 class. By choice. Fine. But then you shouldn't get to travel and enjoy that perk of being on the team. Is traveling with the team that big of a 'perk'? Redshirting so you can stay at the Courtyard by Marriott in West Lafayette, IN 5 times instead of 4, big ole scam.

Sorry to break up the "redshirts who stay at a suburban Piscataway Fairfield Inn are soooo lucky" posts. But I am wondering who will show up today vs. Goldy-- the Penn State who swept Purdue in West Lafayette? OR the Penn State who OSU took to extras in the 5th set Friday? They've looked oddly beatable against some poor teams (Indiana, Michigan State, OSU have all taken games from PSU). But against good teams other than Pitt, they've been sweeping them (Louisville, Purdue, Oregon). Hmm...

I hope OSU rattled their feathers enough and exhausted them that MN can pull this one out π€ Mruzik can put the team on her back though offensively, gotta contain her from the start

Our back court defense is dreadful. This team needs some serious work in all facets of the game, but itβs almost automatic any time the other team swings. Our blocking saved us from this being a much much uglier loss.

What really bummed me out today was the lack of fighting spirit and reverting to looking like the team that had everything to lose.
Much better Gopher teams have lost to much worse Penn State teams in Rec Hall, so I don't understand the mentality.
Getting -.111 hitting out of the middle with zero kills must be rock bottom for middle production in the Shaffmaster era.

Our blocking saved us from this being a much much uglier loss. It was the ugliest loss since before 2012, so not much else to say. Had to go back into some archives from other teams, but it is the worst loss since the 10/30/2009 sweep at Penn State, when the Gophers lost 14-25, 16-25, 17-25. They were outhit by the eventual 3rd straight Champion Nittany Lions .341 - .011. Flush it and move on.

Has Mel ever beat PSU? Just wondering.
I've had this concern for a few weeks but wanted to see how things play out. It seems like the last 2 seasons we start out strong and then fade away. Where's the growth and improvement? Do we peak at the beginning of the season and just kind of maintain the rest? Top teams are slowly improving over the season and it's noticeable. I'm not seeing notable improvement (except for blocking, specifically Phoebe's blocking is π₯π₯)
I know PSU is a good team. But I have the question: are we getting better? I'm not seeing offensive improvement and our digging has not been as sharp as the beginning of the season. Mid-season fatigue?
I'm hoping we see noticeable improvement in November.

Our blocking saved us from this being a much much uglier loss. I noticed this in a big way as well. The digging was awful. Nobody can dig a hard hit shot besides Zeynep and even she is playing too shallow and pushed inside the court far too often. Both zone 6 defenders for the Gophers are consistently out of place and only good for picking up balls off block touches or free balls, down balls, and down ball equivalents. They haven't shown they can shift around blockers arms and put themselves in good places to dig off seams/funnels. Minatee is approaching needs to be replaced territory, Wucherer is still very much Wucherer, and Shaffmaster's setting was all over the place today (although she clearly has been a bright spot for most of the season). This was undoubtedly their worst match of the season. The result itself is not much to overreact about as this doesn't change any of the realistic goals they can achieve this season. Just have to get back to work in the practice gym and continue to challenge themselves.
