Has Mel ever beat PSU? Just wondering. I've had this concern for a few weeks but wanted to see how things play out. It seems like the last 2 seasons we start out strong and then fade away. Where's the growth and improvement? Do we peak at the beginning of the season and just kind of maintain the rest? Top teams are slowly improving over the season and it's noticeable. I'm not seeing notable improvement (except for blocking, specifically Phoebe's blocking is 🔥🔥) I know PSU is a good team. But I have the question: are we getting better? I'm not seeing offensive improvement and our digging has not been as sharp as the beginning of the season. Mid-season fatigue? I'm hoping we see noticeable improvement in November. MN beat them the year Adanna Rollins was at PSU. I can’t remember if it was her freshman or sophomore year.

wtf was there a long outage Sunday night that ate my post?
PavSecRow said flush it & move on
and a detailed hour long dissertation disappeared .....twice upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. retried and the latest reset reason: connection failure
distilled:
i'm not a flush it & move on guy sometimes the worst ends up bringing out your best down the road
the team needs to rewatch the OSU-PSU match for OSU's prowess behind the service line that compromised PSU passing the team needs to rewatch the PSU match to understand the long PSU service runs in every set. In the first two sets they were tied or nearly tied in the late teens after being well overmatched early in the 3rd 4-11, they forced a t.o. at 12-15 and Hanson barely missed a line shot for 13-15... PSU had 21 before they got back in with a sideout
0 kills from MBs .000 H% from Wookie & Acevedo a serious drop in H% from Grote Are our pins having medical issues?
One thing bothered me from a presser recently. One of the players said something about the need to focus on 'our side of the net'. They are going to be in Columbus in a week and they'd best have some focus on OSU propensities. Do you want Phoebe fronting Emme Sellman so we can rain on her coming out party,
Are Stanford players hanging their heads after being swept at -17 -16 -20 by Pitt? That was a dominating performance at home bewteen #1 & #5 Why should MN fans be all that surprised by #3 taking care of #14 in straight sets. MN had an uncharacteristically horrible offense. But for a series of service runs toward the end of all sets they remained in contact with a good team performing well...
If MN hopes to retain the committee's faith in their top 16 seed, they will have to solve their passing inconsistency. The mark of a squad that wants to reach a regional semifinal will be measured by a bounceback in Columbus.

Your statement beginning with "The mark of a squad that wants to reach a regional semifinal..." is absolutely true, but is also a sad commentary on the perception of this program. In the Hebert/ Hugh years the goal was a final 4. Now it seems to be to get a top 16 seed and get to the 2nd week. However, we fans have good hope for the future with Keegan's upcoming recruits + Stella.

We will once again need a middle addition unless Minatee can make huge strides in her blocking. I don’t know if Taylor will be ready as a true freshman, but we shall see. Engeman gives off the same vibes as Minatee. Can step in and make a pretty offensive play once in a while, but otherwise a non-factor at the net. Phoebe is going to be missed next year.

The Gophers are now 3-4 vs. Penn State during Shaffmaster's era. Last year, the Gophers were 6-8 after the Rutgers loss and went 10-4 the rest of the way to make the tournament. In 2022, after a 9-6 start they went 13-2, before bowing out to Texas in the Sweet 16.

Sad to say but it is true about the "highly ranked player(s)". And it is true...not all of them will play up to their ranking. It's wonderful that many Gopher fans want to see many present Minnesota HS players stay home and play for the Gophers next season, but are they truly capable (have the skill/talent) to play at the Big Ten Division 1 level? Do we want this program to rise back to Tier 1, remain at Tier 2 or drop to Tier 3? Not only Phoebe but I am going to add Grote to that will be missed next year. I believe KCook added a new assistant this season to help develop the back court. IMO that has not produced what we need so I would add an experienced/capable DS from the portal too. Or are these fans saying Gilk and Garr will be up to the job at these positions? This season's roster is already close to 50% Minnesota players and not all of them are seeing playing time consistently. There comes a time when you need to leave your heart out of it and become a realist or change your expectations.

INQUIRING MINDS This weekend: A thought came to mind that Acevedo's great efficiency stats may be due, in part, because she has Z on her left, Shaff on her right and Hanson Phoebe Grote up front. Is this not arguably MN's strongest rotation with its two strongest attackers and best blocker at the net and a pair of good defenders next to her? Until today I hadn't looked at any of the columns to the right of Pct. Pts won = aces + kills + blks +OppE Pts lost= SEs +HEs + Opp Ks Shaff & Acevedo benefit in blks from Phoebe's blocking prowess Shaff's OPP Ks is MUCH higher. Why might that be? Are an opponent's passing grades vs server available? Are these stats from Volleymetrics? or ?? Maybe Shaff needs to up her pace, risk more SEs and mix in her very effective shorter float on the assumption that her opponents are more in system and get more kills when she is serving even though Phoebe is on patrol. Apologies for digging in the weeds if this is not your 'thing'.

Unfortunately I don't have serve receive data available. It didn't feel like we were more out of system more than normal during the match. My impression of the middle issues, was more Minatee having a couple poor swings, and Penn State picking up some quality chances, along with a few set location issues.

Apologies for digging in the weeds if this is not your 'thing'. I think for sure the rotation you are in (not to mention the opponent's rotation) impacts the expected chance of winning that point. To be honest, that is something I don't really pay much attention to until we get stuck in a rotation for 8 straight points at the end of a set. I feel like I've seen opponents passing vs. server maybe from someone sharing Volleymetrics data, or maybe it was Volleydork's listings, that I still am not sure I grasp. The stats I have posted are manually taken from the match play-by-play information.

Some day I when I am feeling up to it I will rewatch that match. Hasn't happened yet. Dec. 7, doubly infamous.
