Hmmm so we will definitely be thin at OH but also not tall, so maybe Ostovar might not be the type of pin needed in that class. Probably better to go for some height and presence at the net but I think it would still be worth it to go after her. I am not well-read... what would be national average height for each position? I always assume Wahine are undersized

Would the Wahine want to pass on the #1 player in California because she is only 6 feet tall? I recall a similar conversation about Melanie Parra a year ago. To be clear, we are discussing Layli Ostovar, correct? I don't think Hawaii would pass on her. She was awarded MaxPrep's National Sophomore of the Year and she is a part of the USA Volleyball's NTDP for both indoor and beach. I believe she is on the the Hawaii's radar, but I would assume a number of P5 teams are also in consideration.

I don’t see Arkansas grumbling about on pin hitter height with theirs standing 5’7, 5’10 and 5’11

Thats the thing we can have girls these heights and there are so many amazing players at OH position at this height the thing is our coaching staff need to be doing the extra work to recruit and find them because they are out there. Personally feel like our recruiting could be better in the overall scheme considering 3 of the 5 recruits are Hawaii players or have ties to Hawaii in the 2024 class. (Not that there’s an issue there) but around the country there are amazing shorter OH that don’t get picked up by the likes of Neb/Wis.

I believe that Arkansas runs a slightly more uptempo offense (haven't seen them too much) which could help the 5'7" Gillen find space. Regardless though, she is a great player and just one of the many undersized pin hitters that have made an impact over the history of women's volleyball.

If she continues to grab top local talent, I believe it'll be a step in the right direction.

I would not say size doesn't matter but I would rather have a 6fter with a 31 inches vertical than a 6-2 with a 24; inches vertical.
Sometimes having explosiveness and athletic ability can make up for that missing 2".
Of course, I'll like a 6-2 with a 31" but those end up a P5.

I always assume Wahine are undersized I would say 5’10-6’2” is the average for leftside pin hitters. I think there are only a handful that are taller than that and can still pass and defend at a high enough level. Personally I have no issues with height, but balance for the sake of keeping the practice gym competitive when running scouted screnarios is one reason to have several different types of pin hitters on your roster.

Exactly, and let their own work ethic determine how much of the court that they see

I only joined VT after last season ended, I guess I didn’t comprehend how crazy late bracket match-up threads can get. Some are starting to get more Wild and Intense than my @$$ after Taco Bell Lol

Every time a middle is suggested, I have to point out again that I don’t remember the last time the program had carried more than 3 middle blockers without at least one being a projected pin transitioning player. Well 20 years ago( I know…that long ago…LOL), UH had 6 MBs on the team. Karin Lundqvist, Juliana Sanders, Kari Gregory, Melody Eckmeier, Maya Gustin and Lauren Duggins. And I’m not even counting Nohea Tano. So it’s not unprecedented. Yeah I would include Tano in that count. She was a middle who just was slotted at the Opp spot in the rotation. All the offensive plays that she ran were traditional MH sets. But we don't need to go that far back ... 2018 - Williams, Burns, Liva, Krug 2017 - Maglio, Williams, Burns, Howling 2015 - Magill, Maglio, Burns, Mitchem (if memory is serving me right, I don't believe Mitchem was being seriously looked at for an OH spot until the following 2016 season) And 2 of the above were under the Ah Mow era.

Imagine having Hellvig with Amber throughout the years... what could have been... 🖕 Covid BVS , Jolie , Hellvig and Amber 2020…. Man the potential fr!! 😩 I would have liked to see this... Kentucky won the 2020 title in the spring of 2021. Washington was a final four team that season, and Hawaii handled them during the previous 2019 season. Not to say for certain Hawaii would have done it again. But a Hawaii team with that personnel could have had a shot at competing that year.
