I was at the match last night and I like the way this team battles. My two cents (for what its worth) Caylen, Kate, and Tayli are what they are. We know what we got and are going to get from them - they're solid. Paula G looks really good on offense but her passing still leaves a lot to be desired. Stella was a pleasant surprise and hit well last night - she didn't hit for a high % (.135) but that was mainly because she hit a lot of OOS balls. Her passing/defense got way better in the off-season so based on that it's no surprise she passed Hakas on the depth chart. Hakas had a rough night last night. She hit .050. I think she'll pick it up and play better tonight. I can't see her hitting that low with her abilities. Bamis hits a nice slide but that's about it. Not sold on her as a starter tbh. Not sure how well Mili will transition to D1 so IMHO we need to pick up a couple of D1 experienced MB transfer's if we can. One more stud OH would be nice also.
Aside from Mili and Arquette, who else we got coming in?

Aside from Mili and Arquette, who else we got coming in? Maddie Way a Middle, Adriana Arquette (Setter/Opp, #1 recruit in Hawaii), Mili Sylvester, and Melila Purcell-Telefoni (#10 recruit in Hawaii) a Heavy Armed Opposite who seems to need some polishing.

I think Mili will start. She has been working with Robyn and staff during club season and knows what to work on. From limited highlights, Mili can jump, hit hard and very athletic. The only issue will be the connection with Kate.
I also think Mili will have an advantage of being here now and being able to work with some of her future teammates during open gym and private workouts. A transfer won’t be here until summer.
Mili is one of those kids with the “it” factor. Did anyone see her in person? At 17, she already has a D1 level built. I had high hopes for Maddie too but she got injured and would likely not be able to contribute this coming season.
I do agree we need another MB due to my uncertainty with Bamis and Maddie getting hurt.

I will say this, some people think they should be at the professional level already. We look at it as where they are today. A more realistic reality. Stella in set one was hitting at a .300 pace. That's how Coach Rob will see it. They take everything per set, because they are looking at who fits better with whom and who is in what position. By the time the season comes around, things will look different. We don't sweat it, embrace what you got and trust the process. Both Stella and Jacyn will be playing this coming season, probably starting. Coach Rob will make sure the girls are as ready as can be.

I'm just saying I think we need some help. Not sure how much our recruits will be able to contribute. Arquette is being recruited as a setter, Purcell-Telefoni is a project and Maddie got injured. Not sure how much Mili will be able to contribute. What we got right now won't win our conference let alone make it to the tournament. Without seeing Mili play in person I'm not going out on a limb when I say that our middles will be our biggest weakness. I think we will be ok with Paula G and Caylen but I'd like to see another stud hitter transfer and another D1 middle transfer if can...

Mili is D1 talent. She'll ride the freshman rollercoaster, most all do, but I expect will start and contribute right away. Purcell-Telefoni has enough net presence to play middle in the Big West and have an impact, and can crush a ball. Arquette is good in the middle, heck her problem is she's good at every position. It will be hard to just let her set. There's enough pieces coming in this team could be ok without salivating over every possible transfer. That said, there's opportunity for transfer(s) to come in and steal a spot or two, but I doubt Robyn is desperate with what she already has coming in.

I guess we will see this fall....

The Wahine starters will be solid. What concerns me is the depth. If Maddie is not 100% by the fall, there is NO depth at Middle, and right now, I do not see any depth at the Outside, or Opposite positions. The only depth the Wahine will have is at the Libero/DS and Setter, positions. The problem for Robyn, from my count, is that, she does not have any more scholarships to give out.

I'm not sure how it will translate but she was breathtaking to watch in high school. Easily the most dominant attacker in the state this season. I'm so excited to see the 2024 Wahine!

After watching the match on Youtube, I saw an improvement in passing and serving from Stella. If she continues to trend upward, this is good news for the Wahine!
It was also nice to see Victoria get her first action as a Wuh-hein!

Ok watched most of the game (thanks poi pounder for uploading)
Start with the bad:
- Horrible passing by the OH's. The bad part of Guersching and Adeymi as OH's are that neither are ready for prime time when it comes to serve-receive. UNLV picked on them relentlessly. Rather than use a DS, Robyn left them in to work through it. Alexander being an OPP started out of the SR-pattern but had to come in and help several times. A lot of the hitting errors were a result (later in the match) of the OH's trying to do too much with awful passes and then the ensuing high sky ball bump set. Lane and Leyva didn't get much playing time but I'm assuming in a match they wouldn't have come in to help stabilize the passing at some point.
The good:
- Lang looked as good as she did at the end of the season, especially with the passes being so bad. She's still risk taking, setting against the grain a lot and making some risky middle sets. A lot of those imperfect middle sets, I'm used to Igiede (and even Evans) putting them down but Bamis isn't quite there yet. I agree with the person who said Bamis's best is the slide. She had some nice ones and is definitely stronger behind the setter.
- Alexander also looked great. Not just hitting from everywhere, but passing, floor defense too. I also thought she was the second best passer after Ikenaga on the floor. (Hard to tell though both were being avoided)
- Adeymi had a solid coming out party. Started out really strong. But then had to take out so much trash that the hitting % went down. Solid Floor D as well. Passing broke down (as mentioned above) but she is really good about not letting herself get flustered. Guersching was her usual solid self offensively. She's the lowest error rate on the team, can take an ugly ball and take an aggressive swing without making a lot of errors.
- Ikenaga looked solid. Would have liked to see more of Lane and Leyva to see what they got.
In- Between ------------ Tip Coverage wasn't as bad as early season last year, but I still thought too many tips dropped that they could have got. UNLV seemed to be a pretty smart hitting team so I'm surprised they didn't try it more.
Backup-Setting, the other weakness last year--hard to tell. They were OOS so much during the game that it didn't really matter. Ikenaga still handling backup setting duties despite the no double rules, but I did enjoy when Alexander called her off, set the ball (would have definitely been called under the old system), but still put up a hittable ball they got a good swing out of.
The verdict: Decent overall. Despite losing Igiede, I think they'll be able to score, it will just be the other parts of their game that determines how far they go. (Assuming passing problems are fixed) I think UNLV will end up being pretty good (They do have a Shoji coaching them after all) and could return to the NCAA tourney this year.

I think Miliana’s biggest adjustment to be D1 ready will be hitting a quicker tempo. Watching her school season highlights, she hit almost a 2 tempo set. That won’t slide in the middle if we want to make the post season.
Lang and Alexander looked pretty steady last night. Interested in seeing more of Leyva

I do want to add with the OH's struggling to pass, Ikenaga had to poach a lot and did a really good job on that.
