Were you at the match last night? yup. What were your thoughts on the overall passing?

I do want to add with the OH's struggling to pass, Ikenaga had to poach a lot and did a really good job on that. Well...we don't have any passing OH coming in so if what you said is true, we will have to remedy the issue with what we currently have on the roster. I think Robyn believes she can get the girls to a decent level, otherwise she would have gone after a passing OH. It will be up to the girls to put in the work. With the more liberal rules on double contact, I'm wondering if UH will have their passers take a lot of floaters overhanded instead of bumping them. Seems like Robyn is stacking her team with more offensive minded OH instead of those who are pass first. Way to build a team for the future? Easier to teach hitters to pass than to teach passers to hit?

The first contact has been liberal for a long time now. Care to explain your reasoning?

You can't be called for a double when passing overhand on the 1st contact. That hasn't changed. It's made subtle changes to the 2nd contact as both teams had players calling off the libero when the setter touched it first and weren't afraid to hand set. I wasn't watching how many times the liberos were using hands when behind the 10 ft line. (But it looked the same to me)
I would consider a passing OH who can also hit .200, at least to give the team options. They do seem to be better at out of system hitting, which is good but they were put out of system too much I thought. It's possible one of the OH's get DSd in the fall if they feel Leyva is coming along.
Assuming your hitters can already hit a heavy ball (which is one thing Robyn recruits for), then teaching elite hitting is usually easier than teaching elite passing. Getting anyone to become a competent passer is fairly easy--but almost everyone plateaus and doesn't get much better in their whole lives. Whereas if you already have the physical tools to hit, then teaching you the other stuff is usually easier.

Thanks for that. When is the period for transfers? Is that pau already or can we still get a transfer or two before next year? The Spring Window is April 15-30. What we're not sure of is if we have any open scholarships to offer out in the fall. OK thanks!

If we're talking elite, then I think teaching elite passing is harder than hitting. I think passing requires some finely tuned skills, fluidity and a cleverness that isn't always in demand for elite hitting. What I think is interesting is your point about the physical tools. I would argue that hitting is the most physical skill in volleyball, maybe besides blocking, and that being a elite hitter calls for you to be: 1) Big, 2) Strong, 3) A great leaper. I also think that elite passers have a better feel for the game than just elite hitters. I'm not sure if they tend to be smarter, per se, but there is a different air to an elite passer than there is to an elite hitter. I can also see the argument regarding physical tools being flipped on its head saying that you don't need many innate physical tools in order to be a good passer, making easier. Thank you for the great post!
