My two cents worth after attending all 3 scrimmages: the Wahine got better every match. These 11 ladies are scrappy. Caylen had her ups and downs but she's good to go at oppo. Paula is looking really good. Her passing/defense is way better than last year and her hitting is more powerful. Stella is the biggest pleasant surprise for me. Her passing is good and her hitting is dynamic. I was thinking that because of her size, her blocking would be a liability but last night she solo blocked 6'3" Palazzolo straight down. Hakas seemed to struggle at times but she's a competitor. I also liked Jackie's setting this week. She looks more polished and makes good choices. She also has a better connection with Bamis probably due to them playing on the B team last year. Lang looked like her usual steady self, sometimes bad setting choices and dying sets but she's solid. I would consider running a 6-2. Tayli looked good and so did Leyva. Colby not so much. Bamis is serviceable in the middle. She runs a nice slide but she needs to work on her blocking. Can't wait for August. Gonna watch the replays this weekend but how would you compare Stella and Tali in the backrow?

Ugh not a good day for Hawaii sports: Beachbows got bounced by FSU, Wahine Basketball just got upset in the tournament by Davis so they're done for the season, and our softball team blew a 5-0 lead at UCSB and ended up losing 11-9. What a bummer

I think she'll be ok though. I saw that too after watching the matches. I think it's a testament to the work that Stella has put in instead of Tali being on the struggle bus. The battle for that outside spot will be a good one with both athletes pushing each other. Paula was great this weekend and showed much better footwork and more power and range. I think the Wahine's pin trio will be improved over what we've seen the past few seasons post BVS. I think that Caylen will be their leader.

I can't wait to take in the 2024 season with you all! Side note: I really liked Jacyn. The athleticism is there and is a good foundation for RAM and her staff to build of off with Jacyn.

I'm really liking Paula G's offense. I think she will be the go to this year. IMHO the depth chart after this weekend for OH's: Paula/Stella/Hakas/Mane. Caylen @ Opp, Kate/Jackie @ S (but it's close!), Tayli/Leyva/Colby @ lib. It will be interesting to see if the incoming recruits can shake that up.

I actually didn't think that the setter situation was close. I think that Kate is on track to maintain her position at the setter in a 5-1. What did you see from Jackie to think otherwise?

Jackie was a little shaky the first night but got better the next two. Her set location and choices I thought were better than Kates - Jackie sets a more hittable ball IMHO. She also has a better connection with Bamis than Kate. Kate still has the same problems she always has had - set location and setting choices. Sometimes Kate puts her hitters in bad situations and her sets sometimes die off and are to tight to the net. IMHO Kate is still ahead but like I said, I think it's close.

I look forward to seeing how these two challenge each other. Jackie being improved only makes that position and the team stronger.

What do you think about Robyn instituting a 6-2? I'm not a fan of the 6-2. Largely because it demands that more pieces be performing at a high level. I also think that the two setters need to be similar in order to maintain offensive consistency and you need to recruit this way. I also think that it doesn't teach athletes to be all-around volleyball players. Now in the context of this team, if we were going off of spring, I don't think a 6-2 would work. Jackie and Kate are very different in their setting styles and Hawaii doesn't have enough viable hitters to actually make it an honest 6-2. Hypothetically, I would be more open to it if there was another Caylen on the team who could be an offensive threat. What do you think?

I like the idea of running a modified 6-2 if you have two good setters and enough hitters. I like the idea of having 3 hitters in the front row at all times but you're probably right about not having enough hitters.
