But has only set team USA against the worlds best teams over the last two summers - ask any player how good the U21 team was that they lost to - she has more than enough big match experience Which is still not playing with these teammates on this team. I mean, this is basic stuff. All other things equal, do you want a freshman or a senior at a position? Experience counts. Starck doesn't have it... yet. And that's just one position. I would want talent ..... over their year in school!! I would want upside over age!

Which is still not playing with these teammates on this team. I mean, this is basic stuff. All other things equal, do you want a freshman or a senior at a position? Experience counts. Starck doesn't have it... yet. And that's just one position. Starck looks like a good athlete, and she may become a great college player, but we just don't know yet. It is rare for a true freshman to come in and play great on day 1. For example, Ella Swindle at Texas struggled early in the season last year. Just go back and watch some of the early Texas matches from last year. She got better as the year went on though, and she looked good in the tournament. That is not a criticism of Swindle. Most freshmen struggle to adjust to the speed and power of the college game. Bergen Reilly at Nebraska was the rare exception who was good right out of the gate. That is due to the fact that she had lots of experience playing above her age, including in a 2022 tournament with the US women's national team where, as a 17 yr old, she played with and against adult, professional players who were on average 10-15 years older than her. That kind of experience is almost unheard of, and likely had a lot to do with why she performed so well at the college level on day 1. Maybe Starck will be amazing right from the start. However, I think it is more likely that she will need time to adjust to the college game, and there will likely be some early season struggles. The good news is that I think Penn State will be much better at the end of the year then at the beginning. In addition to Starck, PSU added some other players who could be really good. I could see PSU being a real force come tournament time. And yet I would take Swindle over Bergen any day of the week. It isn't where you start the season but where you end it. Great coaches know that and give their high upside players time to adjust and learn the speed of the game. It pays off. Average coaches get frustrated quickly and pull young players with high upside from the line up and regret it down the road.

The winning argument in team sports is so tired and old for anyone who's thinking of firing back with anything about swindles TEAM beating reillys TEAM. To anyone with no preference for either program who really knows volleyball, bergen was the clear better setter all season long. The national team will put this argument to rest soon enough lol

This reminds me of that one person who was arguing to themselves about how Swindle should have won FOTY over all the insanely talented freshman last season. 😭

Average coaches get frustrated quickly and pull young players with high upside from the line up and regret it down the road. You can talk about Swindle’s upside, her height, her offensive prowess, her serve etc as elements that make you prefer Swindle but saying you’d take Swindle purely because they won is crazy and completely ignores just how team-based volleyball is. Bergen is the better pure setter. Better decision-making, excellent The passing completely broke down, and if a setter can’t get to the ball because the back row can’t pass, how is that result relevant to a setter? Bergen is a second team AA for a reason and was consistent from day 1. Swindle is an amazing setter and has the potential to be elite but had some clear freshman setter moments. Stay on the BYU thread. From what I’ve seen of Starck, she could very well be elite too. But let’s let her grow without solely depending on her team’s skill to define her, please.
