Tomorrow’s the away match at Purdue - is anyone going?
I like Purdue as a team - one of my personal faves to watch. Should be a great match!

First observations:
DeBeer playing w/o her knee brace, but a thigh wrapped from a little muscle sprain, no biggie.
Luper only playing back row (also no knee brace), probably going easy on a sprained ankle from just before the Dayton match.
PK no longer with a cast on her hand, though Crease still has hers taped.
The PA announcer doing his best, but he did rather whiff on a few of Louisville's names.

after watching the purdue match, I think cabello should maybe get the starting job this year. There were some rough moments but much higher highs than what we saw / have seen from Glock

There were some rough moments but much higher highs than what we saw / have seen from Glock I agree - I think she settled in after the third set and made some great decisions, and ran a pretty well-distributed offense. A few connection issues with the middles and back row but I think with more reps she’ll be locked in by the fall. I really liked what I saw.

Yesterday Louisville used their entire bench, so we also got to see Utterback, Drapp, and Urban on the court which was exciting. Utterback has a wicked serve. Urban seems to be second on the DS depth chart behind Schrand, but may be pushing for the top spot. She was serving consistently and had some impressive pickups. Obviously this is all from one spring match so it’s all with a grain of salt, but its been nice to see that these players have potential.
And to think we still have Maldonado Diaz and Peyton Petersen coming in before the fall!

www.youtube.com/live/NalLNOffMdU?si=-ItwgMVFzsy7fmcBLink to the live stream from the Kentucky match. I didn’t watch completely, but some observations from the first two sets: - They played the first two sets in a 5-1 with Cabello setting, Luper DS’ing the back row for Bankston (I think Luper is still recovering from an injury?), and Urban was the first DS to see the court when she subbed in for Robins. - Our middles are getting more block touches, but those block touches could be covered better. -Cabello looks comfortable. Still struggling with some connections here and there but I think overall she’s solid and more reps will do her good. She can do a lot more with a wonky pass than Glock (but I will say I think Glock sets the middle and back row better). - Robins is a great player and I really hope that she gets significant play time this upcoming season. I’m stanning. - Scott has an insane OOS back set around 27:12 to get the ball to DeBeer and its just a beautiful play. Scott for LA 2028.

Seems like overall this was a strong spring season for the Cards.
It’ll be very interesting to see what this team looks like with Maldonado Diaz and Petersen also in the mix. Without them playing in these spring matches it’s hard to say exactly what the lineup will look like in the fall (especially on the right side). Setter and Opp are the really the main question marks.
If I personally were deciding based off of these few matches, I would want to see a 5-1:
Cabello/Robins (use Urban or Schrand as a DS for Robins) Kong/Cresse DeBeer/Luper Scott
I also wouldn’t be surprised if we try using Utterback as a serving sub. Bankston will probably get subbed in more often this season if Luper or DeBeer are struggling. And then we’ll probably see a dub-sub option in late sets with Glock/Maldonado Diaz similar to what we saw last season.
I have to say I’ve been impressed with Cabello throughout these matches. Sure she’s got more work to do, but for a freshman setter coming into a program like this, it can’t be easy and I think she’s done well for her first few months on this team. I think with more training and reps she’ll be ready to run this offense by the fall.
There’s depth at every position now in my opinion, and so I would be surprised to see any spring portal additions. And I’m hoping no spring portal departures either. Go Cards!

I wouldn't be suprised to see Petersen over bankston as first one off the bench if debeer / luper are struggling. Wouldn't mind seeing utterback and Petersen in the mix as the possible options at DS either, both were known as strong backrow players in club and none of the DS's impressed me that much in the spring tbh

That’s really the main incentive for putting Bankston in as the go-to OH sub. And I agree I don’t think any of the DS’s have really stood out as the go-to yet.

I have only been able to get to the Purdue match but based on that and watching her at Eastridge, Cabello is up for the assignment

I’m a little surprised but I believe Louisville can be a Final Four team again. Great libero and pin attackers. Huge RS presence, and tall, athletic middles. The setting is more than adequate.
