I understand the thought of wanting to help this girl better her situation, but there’s another way to look at it. Volunteering to ‘host parent’ is the sort of thing that people who groom and abuse young girls take advantage of. No matter how well a coach thinks they know a host family, if something happens, both the coach and by extension the school district and their insurance company are open to liability. I don’t think we want a world where high school children live outside the home to further their sports careers if we can avoid it. I know people do it. That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be discouraged.

I appreciate and agree with that take in general, but every rule should have its exceptions. This girl’s need to find a host family is because of a series of circumstances outside her control and to the extent that we want to protect children, we should equally want to preserve each child’s ability to hone their gifts and explore their passions in line with their parents’ permission. Everyone here agreed that this was the best choice, including her parents. Doesn’t mean it’s without risks or will end up being fruitful, but in circumstances like these, it should be allowed, with every protection offered to her.

We can also think back to the famous Blindside case where the Coach was the host family and 100% groomed Oher into attending Ole Miss. They probably don't want that happening either.

The WIAA is corrupt when it comes to high school kids transferring schools. I transferred my junior year for circumstances not at all related to sports & they made me sit out an entire year of varsity. Being that I transferred to a small school, there was not a jv team for me to participate on & they robbed me an entire year of competing in the athletics I loved. Truly will never forgive them for that, I had written letters explaining my circumstances & how I transferred not for the purpose of playing sports & they still made me sit. Something needs to change, it’s high school not professional sports

Just curious if this was within the last 10 years. I graduated in 2016 and I remember the WIAA being very strict about a few different things, including eligibility.

Wisconsin vs Penn State was the featured match on Sarah Pavan's episode of Volley talk this week I thought it was a good listen, in particular her take on the different serving strategies Nebraska had against Wisconsin compared to PSU

First time hearing this podcast. It's giving mean coach scolding the team in the locker room after a loss. What a dour way to deliver analysis, glad she's not a coach. Thanks for sharing, will stick to the other pods that can dive into what went wrong for a team without negging players!

Graduated in 2020 & they were definitely strict, but way too strict imo. Like I said these are high school extra curriculars, not professional sports. Just seems so ridiculous to me

This podcast would be great for a traditional fan and not family of volleyball players or players themselves who may tend to be on the sensitive side.
She (Povan) stated that she wasn't the biggest fan of Charlie leading up to this game. So what? I want someone to tell me what I have to work on not blow sunshine and rainbows. Didn't agree with some of what they stated but learned more about the game then many other podcasts you will see out there. Detailed and interesting, I will take that each and every time.

Yeah, she doesn’t pull any punches. I’m sure the Penn State coach would like to have a few words. It is unfortunately true that we haven’t been consistently overpowering this year, though our talent level is higher than ever. We are on the right trajectory and I think we are peaking at the right time. I see no reason why we can’t win every match from now on.
