You know things were bad when Julia is mad. Punzel: “It’s just bad because we didn’t put up a fight,” said senior captain Julia Orzol. “It wasn’t a loss with fighting spirit, competing to the best of our abilities. A lot of things were not clicking and we did not put in enough effort to figure it out early enough.”
“Each set we were able to come back but we need to toughen up to stay in those endings in the red zone and not panic,” Orzol said. “I feel like that’s happening a lot. It needs to happen individually, but also bringing people around with you. That’s a super important thing that we need to be better at.
“There were just too many errors that just got in our way of gaining any momentum. Being able to find a way of jumping on them instead of being dominated. It hurts. If you go down after playing good, quality volleyball, it (stinks) but you can live with that.”No naming of names but it isn't hard to figure out who is struggling out there. Yeah. Robinson has a history of this but she managed through it last night. Damrow and Anderson really need to better manage. And Anna...🤷♂️

FREE ROBINSON ....has Wisconsin played with a 6'2 this season? No 6-2. Kelly is doing his thing ... They're should not be a 6-2 with our setters.

Oh, the uber crazy Nebraska fans make me giggle. I mean, what else do they have to live for besides their volleyball team? No major league sports, and let’s be real—Nebraska isn’t exactly Ivy League material either. Nebraska has a 79% acceptance rate compared to Wisconsin’s 49% fyi Good thing this is a volleyball forum then and not an academics/football forum!

C’mon. I really don’t have to explain how the 4 counting stat errors by your 4 year starter, captain, nat’l championship winning OH2 aren’t equivalently explanatory to the uncounted bad plays made by a freshman and a backup to a freshman who have never played a big game in the Bob before, do I?

Do I have it right that the realistic best case scenario is sole possession of 3rd place in the B1G? Can’t catch Penn State even if Nebraska beats them unless they step on a rake against teams they oughta beat.

The focus now should be preparing for the NCAA tournament. Hopefully Lola and GG will be back for at least one more regular season match, and we get through to the sweet 16 to play at peak level. We did manage to soundly beat Penn State not too long ago. We may not be at Nebraska’s level right now, but so what —the championship is still not taken yet.

You might've lost the match but Wisconsin is clearly Andi Jackson's kryptonite. Really silenced the most efficient hitter in the country both times this season, or she was before this match anyway. I appreciate the compliment ... now if we could just have depth in the BR for OOS sets and passing.

Sheff also needs to help his team out. What is with this aversion to challenging this year? That Orzol line shot in set 2 literally changed momentum. And then in set 3 down 5 he...STILL refuses to challenge on a questionable call. Meanwhile Cook will challenge on even match point just in case (literally happened in the NC 3 years ago). Even on the very obvious touch tonight the entire team had to plead to him to challenge. Sheff has obviously forgotten more about volleyball than I will ever even learn, but I can't understand this aversion to challenging?? I repeat it again, HE IS NOT A GOOD GAME COACH. He needs an agressive assistant that makes him pull that card. No Subs. No Challenges. No calling out %*$#ty plays tonight.... ... it's almost like we could use Jaylen Reyes. HAHAHAH I'll show myself out.

Charlie I think needs to slow down and let the game come to her. She makes some extraordinary sets, very pretty sets but consistency is lacking in a big way. But other components are flailing as well. Saige too often is a bit out of position and her OOS sets leaves much to be desired. Orzol not being a threat at OH2 against Nebraska. Charlie should have given Booth double the amount of sets she did last night. Go with what is working and don't force to Sarah.
Unfortunately Booth isn't capable of a reliable slide attack and we have to wait until Dev or even CC is in there. If I had the time I'd like to look at the number of times Nebraska put down kills without the Badgers even being in a playable position for it whether it Carter late to the block or back row positioning. Now with the last bit of regular season and first NCAA contest Wisconsin will have to shore up their weaknesses or hide them better. Lola and GG coming back doesn't bridge the gap that we face against Nebraska/Pitt.

Great....so what did Sheff have to lose down 5 on the road after Robinson maybe hit out? When he had BOTH of his challenges remaining? In challenging maybe the ref make a bad call (just like in your example) to overturn EVEN if it wasn't in. Why are you so worked up about challenges? I understand being frustrated by the loss tonight, but "challenges" weren't gonna make the difference. I actually think the Set 2 set point would have been a huge momentum changer -- he should have challeneged, and we would have won, which makes the score 1-1 instead of 2-0, and we end on a high note where we fought back.

Sarah's roll shots kill me! Especially the middle of the court, high, and right to the opponent. I understand sets could be off, the block is set correctly in front of her, mixing it up etc. ... I don't understand not hitting down the line, at 50% speed, over the setters/ds head... spread the court, she is so predictable. And if she's not scoring, Wisconsin, is not likely winning. I didn't understand why there were no 3-1 balls to Smrek, just straight-up 1's, which caused her many attack errors. Anna and the 3-1 have been kryptonite to Nebraska's block. I wondered about Sarah not taking the (very open) line shot as well. :/

I didn't think there was much structurally wrong with what the badgers did last night. I was worried Damrow would be a problem in SR and she really wasn't until the end. The SE problem did pop up. I thought Chan/anderson did well in D. I thought the badgers on average played pretty well last night. If there was one thing they really struggled at it was transition again. Not nearly as bad as against the gophers, but still fatal when facing a team that can just take punches and come back at you.
The real problem though was that the badgers kept making errors just as they were grabbing momentum or when they could have stopped the huskers from getting momentum. You need to hold onto momentum against a husker team that is playing well at home. Every time they would make a string of good plays they would do something pretty dumb.
The badgers had 4 BEs. That almost never happens. Orzol netted with her follow through on one critical point. Damrow and Franklin both pass virtual freeballs right over the net when the badgers had the advantage in trans. Franklin and Booth miss easy overpass kills by tapping the ball right where the defender was. The SEs were of course a real problem every time the badgers started playing well. We threw so many points away.
Those aren't normal mistakes, except for the SEs. They shouldn't be hard things to avoid at this point of the year. They are the mistakes of a nervous team. They need to get their self belief hardhats on.
EDIT: I'm just seeing the Orzol take, and I couldn't agree more.
