Any report on how our scrimmage against State went? My info is not good at all. Could not score and everyone got frustrated. I think we lost 4 out of 5 sets.

Quick Note: Babic is not playing anywhere currently and Ava Swain also has quit the team.
We did not play well. BUT we are not playing a starting line up. We are using the spring for what it is supposed to be, to develop. There were flashes of really good but this team cannot win in a 5-1 with Zoe. We will look DRASTICALLY different in the fall when Eisert arrives and we run a 6-2. Zoe is good, but just too much of a defensive liability and sets way too high IMO. Prt of not terminating is Mike wanting her to run faster and that is a work in progress.
Mabrey IMO needs to be benched. She is not jumping as high nor honestly taking smart shots. Safi and Emani look great on the outside. Shea got time on the RS as Thorpe and Yardimici did, but Mike is giving other players experience. Lauren got some time in the middle. Englebrecht is so solid.
Carson is just UGH. Marissa is okay, Maddy is frustrating. Makes an eye popping play then a bone headed one. Dear God we need a DS/L NOW.
I fear we are going to get a Jekyll Hyde team in the fall. One that can beat a top team then follow up the next day and lose to a bottom team. May be wrong, pieces are better this year than last, just have to come together.
This is not a bad team at all. Just one that is missing a few key pieces and trying to figure out who is going to fill the first 6.

What are the odds y’all run a 5-1 with Eisert? It looks like she ran one all 4 years at MTSU stats wise. That may provide more flexibility with subbing, especially for DS’s and give Zoe more time to grow/develop.

I think we start in a 6-2, especially with Yardimici and Thorpe both being solid opposites. If Zoe doesnt improve I see us going to a 5-1. Taylor is a VERY good get after watching film on her. Honestly though, wondering if we see Thorpe on LS if our pins ont start terminating better

Just one that is missing a few key pieces and trying to figure out who is going to fill the first 6. I agree in general with your assessment. But we do disagree on how good this team is. I think the team and the program are not good. I wrote about that before and am standing by it still. Although my assessment offended some people on here(which doesn’t bug me one bit) I think it’s important to call honestly what you see in the mirror. We keep making the same error over the years of having high expectation with nothing to show for. We lost all but 2 players (Maddie and Shea) from that highly ranked recruiting class of 2022 and two good players from 2023. That is not a good reflection on the program. I think that you finally see that Maddy is not good. Flashes of good but no consistency. Other DSs are similar. One new good lib will not fix things. It’s a more fundamental problem that we have: we don’t have coaches that can teach the players how to play. Maddie still doesn’t know when to pickup a dump or a tip. If she hasn’t learned by now she just won’t as for that you need to have coaches teach you or have a feel the game and she doesn’t. I don’t see these coaches fixing that either. Mike has seen that for several years (recruiting and 2 years of college play) now and nothing. I don’t expect much from Zoe. Which you also see now. We will be running 6-2 because Mike is very invested in Zoe as you said. Eisert Is not big enough for 5-1 imo. Mabrey should be benched, I agree! But Mike and the coaching staff don’t give me any confidence that they could do that. She can do whatever with no consequences. Let’s just be real and not have high expectations. But I’ll leave it here currently and hope I’m wrong. Fall will show it.

You never know with this coaching staff, but I think 5-1 is out of the question with either Zoe or Eisert.

I really wish we could have gotten Arcia Davis.....because Engelbrecht is the only middle giving us anything. I really need Taylor to make an impct day 1....
We lost 3 of 4 sets at HOME. Lost the first two in extras: 27-25, 29-27, and lost the fourth 25-22. We won the 3rd set 25-21.
Observations.
Good: Safi is a terminal weapon. She can take some pretty big swings in and OOS. I am big on her this year. However, she was very high error today trying to go high or sharp. Emani also looks really good. She is working hard on her defense. Both Yarmdimici and Thorpe are great opposite additions. Thorpe is very nice off the court but SUPER competitive on court. We will run a 6-2 just because of how much these two add for us. Lauren was actually decent today. Made some big plays on the block.
Bad: BACK ROW BACK ROW BACK ROW. Jesus would need to work a miracle to make our back row better. May is struggling, Carson is slow, Marissa is best we have IMO. We are going to struggle with teams that serve good and have diverse offenses. Swift: Sadie is not giving us anything offensively and errors too much on the block. Zoe was not good today. Lots of high lofty sets and not smart decisions. Mabrey just isnt nearly as fit. Not jumping as high and did not play the last 2 sets. Has an IDGAS attitude and slow to the ball. I truly wonder if there is a nagging injusry there or issue with her knees/legs.
I try to be an optimistic person but I am not getting my hopes up for a turn around season unless Eisert comes in and transforms us and we get a solid 1 or 2 back row players.

We already know we have Michigan State and Michigan at home.
We also will play Lipscomb and Kansas State at Kansas State the weekend of Sept 13th

If they can get out of that at 2-2 that would be a win. So what is your outlook based on what you've seen? In for another losing season? It seems like the Heels underachieved last year...

Depends on who we can get out of the portal as a DS/libero. We desperately need someone. Maple was all in on UNC but Indiana cae into play and was trying to get her instead. She just won another Natty on the beach and is supposed to be now weighing indoor options more heavily. I think we will know if she is ours i the next week or so. If not, I am not sure we have looked at many more DS players. In the spring there was too much inconsistency with May, Meyerhoefer, and Overbeck. I do think we will be way better in the fall than we were the sprin (does not take much) because of Taylor Eisert coming in. She is a very solid setter who will probably run a 6-2 with Zoe. The 6-2 will benefit us MUCH better than the 5-1 we had to run all spring due to only having one setter. RS looks spectacular. LS is a battle. Shaff, Emani, Safe all have their weaknesses. MB is split. Engelbrecht is good but neither Swift nor Shcutter are well rounded enough. I think is Taylor comes in and is ahead of schedule she may take the other spot. I think that Michigan and Michigan State should be beatable at home. Out of that quad of games Kansas State is most difficult (they swept BYU twice and should have been in the NCAAs this year).
