WVU also had a shortfall of 45 Million dollars and a president who had been an itinerant snake oil salesman. He has gutted much of the academics at WVU, and he is determined to continue on his crusade to turn WVU into a trade school. This has a bearing on athletics because he has also done away with 12 majors, which affects recruiting. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/12/class-war-west-virignia-university/676152/Like WVU is the only Uni with a deficit. They still offer 300 degree programs and continue to maintain their R1 status. The “gutted” programs affected about 1% of their students. So these were most likely degree programs with declining enrollments.

Just know if you’re a WVU recruit and the coaches say they’re going to stay while you’re there , They’re lying. pretty ignorant post to the profession of coaching and the uncertainty it brings. I agree with you that a place like WVU may end up being high turnover with assistants but that's not the case with HCs.

In terms of recruiting, it has its challenges, but hiring a proven coach like Greeny will be better for their recruiting than 12 majors (4% of 300) that are no longer offered.

True, but there a lot of programs that had long tenured coaches during the 70’s and 80’s that was more the norm then. Kramer had 5 seasons and Reed had 9. I still don’t consider that a revolving door.

Sunahara record at WVU (9 seasons): Overall: 106-156 (.404) Conference: 32-114 (.219)
I don't know how funding for international scholarhips works at WVU, but if Greeny can pull that route off, she has nowhere to go but up.

Should be a non-issue.

The problem is not about the enrollment of the majors, but it is that the majors are fundamental requirements for many other majors, they are the basic under girding of undergraduate education.

From a strictly technical coaching point of view, I don't think Greeny is necessarily that much better than Reed, but she has certainly had more success with her teams, and success with international players.

West Virginia is showing out. Why do I feel this is setting me up for NorthWestern disappointment?

I don’t disagree it happened but the “sky is falling” tone of your post is where we differ. I guess 1% of the students who were impacted feel the same but if their majors are common and in demand there are likely plenty of other options for them. The current Juniors and Seniors are not impacted at all and the other 99% of the WV students will be just fine. 🤷🏻♂️

Washington State is a good program. I haven't read the whole thread, so I'm assuming it's already been said - this really speaks to the ramifications of conference reallaignment. Jumping ship to a worse VB school, but better conference is all I can see in this move. Though given WSU's unknown future, it's not apparent it would remain the level of program it is.
