Shout out to the newest member of the Big 10, the Washington Huskies. The dawgs scheduled appropriately, and won all of the non-conference matches. Thank you for doing your part for the conference RPI!

...well nevermind. Already took losses to Pitt, Missouri, Creighton, Kansas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Old Dominion, St. Louis Whelp, some of those are just rough (@ Indiana, Iowa, and Rutgers…). Special shout-out to UCLA too for losing to UC Davis 🙃 On the docket for today: Minnesota vs Chicago State (10am PT) Purdue vs Tulsa (10:30am PT) Iowa vs Drake (12pm PT) UCLA @ Cal (1pm PT) Maryland vs UCF (3pm PT) Michigan @ Duke (3:30pm PT) Illinois @ Lipscomb (4pm PT) Wisconsin vs Texas A&M (5pm PT BTN) USC vs UCSD (7pm PT) A good number of these should be winnable, but UCLA, Maryland, and Michigan pulling out wins would be a big plus Outside of Iowa losing to Drake, HUGE day for the Big 10. Maryland survived UCF in 5 sets, and UCLA and Michigan both sweep ACC opponents.

How do you rank the Big Ten teams, heading into Conference play?

So you have maybe the best middle in the Big Ten as an honorable mention who? Carter Booth? mmmm yes. I don't think Wisconsin's passing and setting will give her the offensive opportunities to shine and she hasn't shown any ability to be an offensive force but for an in system set with one blocker in front of her, she doesn't serve, and if Wisconsin does go to a 5-1, where she actually does lead the conference (blocking) will take a big hit if she's next to Charlie F. rather than always being next to Smrek or Robinson. I'm not saying Carter Booth can't or won't be all conference, but I think the fundamentals aren't working in her favor as an individual contributor. well, conference play hasn't started yet, however 4 weeks into the season, Carter Booth is sitting at 1.48 kills per set, doesn't serve, and, most importantly, has dropped to .81 blocks per set. As I said to start the season, the fundamentals aren't working in Booth's favor to be all conference this year.

How do you rank the Big Ten teams, heading into Conference play? Honestly, no noticeable change from where I was at the start of the season. Top Tier - Nebraska and a healthy Wisconsin Next Tier - Penn State, Purdue and maybe Oregon Mid Tier - Everyone else Bottom tier: Rutgers, Northwestern, Iowa, Maryland I expect Nebraska or Wisconsin to win the conference, the next three best teams to be Penn State, Purdue and probably Oregon, then a jumbled mess of NCAA tournament quality teams (Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, UCLA, Washington) and could easily see any order for those teams.

Maryland feels a step above Rutgers, Northwestern, and Iowa this season but I wouldn’t be comfortable putting them in the same class as Michigan State and Michigan either lol, I feel like if I had to place a bet on any team to finish anywhere, I’d probably pick Maryland for 15th (okay probably Nebraska for first but still)

So far, -After the OOC, Nebraska is in the lead by not a little, but Wisconsin may have figured out its line-up and their young setter was much better Saturday than she was opening night, so I expect the B1G will come down to those two. Expected Purdue to be better than just good, but they aren’t. The jury is out on Penn State, but if the Nebraska B side is their best MB, that’s a weakness. -Illinois, Washington and USC will most likely make the tournament. Minnesota is improved. Oregon will make the tournament, Indiana won’t. UCLA, Ohio State and Maryland probably aren’t as good as Indiana. The Michigans have both improved, but no tournament for either one. Expect nine teams to make the tournament. -Fifteen of the eighteen B1G teams have B1G quality players, three don’t. I still don’t see Iowa winning a match, but that will become a little more clear Thursday night in Piscataway, if you want to watch bad college volleyball. How bad NW will be is still a bit unclear because of their short ooc schedule. -As much as things change, the more they stay the same.

Photos1 preseason assessment of Washington:...Clearly Washington is the most overrated team. There were 4 coaches at B1G media days that appeared over their heads, Gabriel was one of them.🏐 Gabriel’s disaster during her B1G media day interviews only served as an explanation for the dumpsterFIRE that was the 2023 season. She may very well have been great assistant coach, but being a head coach is very different. The 2023 season verified her ineffectiveness as the head coach-and imo media days gave us a window into why. --- The B1G is the best volleyball conference in America and substandard coaches reveal themselves quickly. Even if we use 13… they are still probably an uncompetitive 16, 17 or 18… bad coach, weak roster, B1G schedule equals 16, 17 or 18… and there is a gap from 15 into that group… sorry, but you know that. 🏐 Photos1 "updated" assessment of Washington just four weeks in:Washington...will most likely make the tournament.

Nebraska with decisive wins over two top rated teams and gets nobody on the awards. Guess that's evidence of a very balanced team.

Yeah, based on stats, there was no single player that consistently stood out greatly from the others or enough to overlook the stats from other teams' players. Even Bergen's assists per set were quite lower compared to others.
