She’s very athletic with a powerful arm, but seems to be a bit less consistent than Murphy and not as good in ball control as Keene. But I can’t imagine she doesn’t see some playing time early in the season because it does seem close between her and Murphy.

The starting lineup for the exhibition match against Texas A&M was exactly what I expected.

Oop, Grace Carroll and Lauren Briseño did the preseason media presser today for Baylor. Let me find out Grace is starting in that opposite spot tomorrow 🫢

I get to watch Baylor volleyball tomorrow!
Listened to a few interviews from Coach McGuyre and some key points I picked out:
- Baylor went from having 0 seniors last year to 7 this year. There is definitely more leadership on the court this season.
- Serving has been the weakness and has been a key focus in practice following the A&M exhibition.
- Elise McGhee has improved since last season, noting her serve, backrow attack, and particularly her blocking.
- Out of the newcomers, McGuyre highlighted Barrett-Frazier and Carroll as ones to watch, and mentioned Crain is playing at a high level as well.
- McGuyre gave a lot of praise to Barrett-Frazier. She is a captain and is a great leader. He noted that she is very aggressive, both offensively and blocking, and that this was something that they were missing out of the setter position last season. Also noted that she is fiery on the court, and if there were a player to get a yellow or red card, it would be her lol.
- Lauren Briseño has only improved in her passing, and is taking even more court. McGuyre mentioned she has been so aggressive in serve receive that she’s practically passing solo.

Well, the Bears started off 3-0 this weekend, which was not surprising given the competition. They'll have a much tougher match tonight vs. Rice who is coming off a 3-2 win over Houston Christian and a 3-0 win over Texas State. There were some some good things I saw on the court from Baylor over the weekend and some things that definitely need improvement moving forward. Here are my general thoughts:
- I LOVE everything about Jackie Barrett-Frazier and so glad we picked her up. She reminds me a lot of Hannah Sedwick with her overall well-rounded skillset with better setting skills. She impacted the game in so many ways, but mostly, I really appreciate how aggressive she is at the net, something that has been missing from BU over the last two seasons. She has a variety of dumps and tips and averaged a little over 1 kill/set on the weekend. She also looked great defensively, averaging over 3.5 digs/set. What stood out most about her though was her leadership on the court. She is so engaging with her team around her and is definitely the communicator that Baylor needed. She still has to iron out some of these hitter connections, but I am glad to have her at Baylor. She is a gamer and earned Top Setter of the Baylor Classic.
- Elise McGhee wasn't as dominant as I expected her to be against this level of competition. She took some really big, powerful swings but then had many shots that sailed long or dribble into the bottom of the net. Not sure if she is still working on her connection with Jackie, but really didn't look comfortable on her out of system swings, where she made the most errors. I am confident she will be fine as the season progresses, but hoping she finds her groove soon. She did look good behind the service line and her defense and serve receive held up, but will definitely need more offense from her.
- On that note, Kendal Murphy was the biggest surprise of the weekend. Even Coach McGuyre said himself that he wasn't expecting to rely on her so much, so soon. She was named MVP of the Baylor Classic after averaging 3.33 kills set, hitting .460 and adding 2.0 digs/set. I definitely was not expecting to see both her AND McGhee playing 6-rotations, but Kendal seemed to pass well from the eye test. Hoping she continues on this path but she has been impressive so far.
- Baylor seems to be trying to solidify the starters in the middle. Bibinbe and Andrew both only played in 5 sets on the weekend, with Davis playing in 7. They all have different skill sets and it should be a competitive matchup in practice moving forward. I'd expect Davis and Bibinbe to start vs. Rice, but wouldn't be surprised by them all seeing time throughout the match. Victoria Davis has sooo much potential, but is still very raw. Once she gets the connection with Jackie down, she could be a force with her athleticism. More consistency is needed from this position, but nothing too alarming from the first weekend.
- Serve receive/first contact still looked pretty good despite Baylor playing both OHs in 6-rotations. Ulufatu was the DS for Sczech and played well, both in serve receive and right back defense. Her and Briseno were for sure holding it down alongside McGhee and Murphy. Keene only played sparingly in two sets, but it will be good to have her available if McGhee needs a break in the back.

Jackie has been great for the Bears so far this season. Still needs a bit more connection with the middles, but loving her all-around game and leadership.
And I am glad the Kreck is also getting some playing time too. I imagine she learns a lot under Jackie this year.
