volleyballworld 13 #PARIS2024 ! STARTING IN The FIVB has confirmed, that for the first time in the history of the Olympic #volleyball competition, each team participating in the Games will be entitled to include one non-competing (AP) athlete to replace an athlete for medical reasons.
As such, team rosters will increase from 12 to 13 athletes. ® AP athletes are non-competing athletes accredited by the IOC and serve as a last-minute replacement if an athlete is unable to compete due to injury or illness.
® The replaced athlete shall not be allowed to compete for the remainder of the competition.
® While the 13th athlete will be able to attend matches and train with the team, they will not be accommodated in the Olympic Village unless additional support is granted by the respective National Olympic Committee.

I prefer of course expanding the roster than have a medical sub. But you have to start somewhere, hopefully this will be the first step to an eventual increase in roster for each national team.

When Karch brings Poulter as that 13th player instead of a middle or OH, then you'll see plenty of mess!

Seems like a silly rule. Shouldn't you be able to replace a player from a pool of 4 or 5 instead of 1? With this rule, your MB goes down so you replace them with a setter? Am I missing something?

I'll have a story on this later today with reaction from both our Olympic coaches.

I mean great that a 13th can go but isn’t it just an alternate ?
Or was it that alternates had to be chosen before the start of the games?

My money is on Hentz or another middle. 4 outsides is plenty. We know Larson and Krob serve the same roll and Karch seemingly flavors blonds so count KP and Frantic in. Middles seem to be the most uncertain so I’d load up there.

Do all 13 win a medal? I would hope so. Don't support staff/coaches get the medal too? I thought they did (in which case the player would) I would say it's going to be a libero especially since most rosters get only 1 but I guess if it's a country that runs a 6-2 they could take a setter.

Do any countries even run a 6-2? I cant recall seeing a 6-2 in my limited watching of national team play
