UConn wins 15-12 in the 5th vs. St. John's. This was an entertaining match. Some big digs/blocks down the stretch. I was impressed with UConn from a defensive standpoint - and of course Pannell. What disappoints me most about UConn's schedule is they didn't even try to get one decent win in the non-conference. Literally 0 Top 100 teams as of right now in RPI.... They were 8-22 last year. Tough to fault the coach for not scheduling to get an at large…

This is mostly the same roster (or at least core) from last year, minus Tylska and the freshman libero. jinx n00b

Quick shout out to Marquette who managed a reverse sweep against DePaul last night and kept their hopes of making the NCAA tournament alive. we are not shouting out Marquette for almost losing to DePaul 😭

They don't have to schedule a Penn State. Try to get a Yale, Towson, JMU, etc. FWIW, I certainly wouldn't have had UConn close to the radar as an at-large team. And the argument I'd get is... would those other teams even be willing to schedule UConn? What makes matters worse for UConn is their Big East schedule only had them traveling to Marquette/Creighton, don't even get a shot at home.

It's debatable how many good teams they could beat. But from what I saw today, missing a top player, they are a competitive team. Thinking about this, they could have been a version of North Texas 2018. UNT scheduled creampuffs + one top 30~ish team, and beat that team in the non-conference. Then, they split with Western Kentucky. I could see UConn beating Marquette in the Big East Tournament, it feels like one non-conference win could have really given them a shot. (to be fair, North Texas was barely left out of the tournament that year, so, it's not like UConn would have had a great shot even with one top 25-50 non-conference win to sell), but, mayb ethey have a shot.)

I wonder if Creighton/Marquette had input on it or if UConn got paired simply because of their location (besides their record). I would've preferred Georgetown probably. (although the coaches do like the DC trip)

Creighton traveled to both Providence and UConn last year, and did not play either at home.

I believe it is the first year of the new schedule. A coach told me it was a combination of RPI and expected finish. UCONN knew they would only get Marquette and Creighton twice this year, you would think they’d schedule a little bit tougher in the non-con, but they are still a top 50 RPI team today so maybe this is working as they hoped.

This year, they changed travel partners and strategically scheduled. In ‘23 Creighton happened to only play Providence and UConn once. In ‘24, it was intentional.

Marquette up 1-0 in the odd 1/2 Big East non conference battle of Milwaukee vs UW-Milwaukee. 2-0 now. Milwaukee is #100 in rpi, not too far from St. John’s and DePaul, so way better for Marquette than five other big east opponents in the 200s.

So what does UConn need to do to get an at large bid?
