No hitters, upsets, and (unfortunately) injuries
(4) Florida State & (13) Oregon dropped their openers to unranked competition to Charlotte (at home) and in Clearwater in a tournament respectively)
(14) Alabama's Kayla Beaver fired a no-hitter and was one walk away from a perfect game. Beaver, a transfer from Central Arkansas recorded 14 strikeouts in the outing
(17) Nebraska's Jordy Bahl had her big Nebraska debut be derailed after a rough first couple of innings and an injury that hopefully doesnt keep the star pitcher out for too long. (10) Washington got to 3 runs against Bahl, and tagged the husker bullpen for 5 more to run rule the Huskers.

Charlotte is a good team. They gave Duke a run for their money in the regionals last year.
Also, two years ago, I had Charlotte in the NCAA Tournament and Arizona out, but the committee didn't see it that way. Charlotte had the RPI - but had some bad losses and finished 7th place in Conference USA. Good to see Charlotte recover and remain a solid program since then.

Yeah, that was the year the committee went straight RPI with the exception of Charlotte and Arizona.

#3 stanford drops a tight one to Kentucky
while #23 Virginia Tech wins an extra innings duel 8-1
it was 1-1 going into the 8th inning but the Hokies plated 7 runs in the top of the 8th including a grand slam by Rachel Castine
Castine hit a grand slam earlier in the day against Illinis

Must have been a costly error. Looks like a walk, an error, and a sac fly to start the first inning, and then neither team scored again. Neither team got a hit.

San Diego State is the first team I see to lose out on the new rule of a pitch-clock (20 seconds). Interestingly, it counts for the batter too. In a 1-2 count, the batter took too long, and she is called out.
Another random thing involving San Diego State: They are one of the few teams that will make themselves the designated visiting team in some games of *home* tournaments they host. It's kind of like the NCAA Regionals, where, sometimes you could be the 'visiting' team on your home field. I like it for its graciousness to the visiting teams, but given how much of an advantage it is to be a home team in baseball/softball, *and* the fact that San Diego State is an at-large caliber team, I am surprised they are willing to do this. Kudos to them. Don't know if I'd want my team doing it though.

Stanford's leadoff hitter has a batting average of .176 ... There's only one person with a worse batting average in the starting lineup with a worse average.
But, the leadoff hitter's OBP is .541, the HIGHEST on the team.
I can't remember ever seeing a leadoff hitter with that big of a discrepancy. I mean, good for her, especially as a leadoff, just get on base.. She has 19 walks alone on the season in just 16 games!

I assumed she was tiny, but she is 5'7". WTH? She only puts the ball in play 17.6% of the time. Really odd.
