Spoke with coach Pham after the match, and asked (among other things) what the scholarship situation was. Tommies were at 6 scholarships last year, and are at 10 this year. He expects St Thomas will be at the full 12 in 2025… just in time for limits to increase.

Has it been determined whether St. Thomas can play in the conference tournament? I've heard both yes and no (the No's being from some of the announcers on the Summit League network). I need to know whether to keep my streaming for another month!

Kind of like how they're not able to make the NCAA tournament until next year (if I remember correctly)? Or is it an athletic department decision within St. Thomas?

I need to know whether to keep my streaming for another month! The Summit League had decided a long time ago (when St Thomas first joined) that they would allow St Thomas to participate in Summit tournaments (all of them). But because the NCAA is not allowing St Thomas to participate in NCAA tournaments during their 5-year transition period, The Summit has decided that if UST ever wins a conference tournament, the auto-bid in that sport (to the NCAA tourney) would go to the highest-ranked eligible team from regular-season play. The reason it is 5-years and not the usual 4 years, is that St Thomas went from D-III directly to D-I.... the first time that had ever happened. So Yes to Summit tournaments, and no to NCAA tournaments... 2026 is the first year they are eligible. I wonder if that means fall sports have to wait an additional school year? That part I'm not certain about.UST has already participated in SL basketball tournaments, so I'm not sure why the announcers would say that.oops! see my next comment in the thread....

Based on Coach's comments previously in interviews, it sounded like a UST internal policy, not anything dictated by the NCAA. More of a budget thing, or a "we can't compete in the NCAAs yet, so it doesn't justify the scholarship expense" thing, .... But JT spoke directly with him, so I'll defer to his opinion.

I need to know whether to keep my streaming for another month! So I think I might actually be wrong about this. According to this Minneapolis Star-Tribune article from 2020: Later that Summer, the League changed the Men's and Women's basketball tournaments in order to include all league members, and decided to allow UST to participate. That way, UST wouldn't be taking another team's spot. That hasn't happened in other sports, so I assume they would NOT be allowed to participate. (including Volleyball). St Thomas actually just won the regular season Baseball title last Spring, but did not participate in the SL Tournament, since it was only 4 teams. Since the VB tournament only invites 6, the Tommies are probably not eligible.

I didn’t ask directly “is ‘ten’ an internal, conference, or NCAA dictate” but the *impression* I got was that it was an internal Tommie decision.

I really think Olivia Swenson, Sydney Schnichels, Avery Jesewitz and Kaitlyn Erickson should all think about being Tommies in the 2026 season. The first two will never get playing time at the U. Rutgers is terrible. Erickson is better than D3.

St Thomas ends their regular season… 18-10 overall, 10-6 conference. With at least one win against six of their Summit opponents (NDSU and Omaha each won both of their “vs St Thomas” matches this year), Omaha remains the only school that the Tommies have not taken a match against in D-I play.
At worst, they will finish fourth in the League. At best, they’ll be tied for third with S.Dakota.
