usctrojans.com/sports/mens-volleyball/schedule/2025Outrigger Invitational (March 13-15) - Penn State, USC, Ball State, Hawaii Good rpi schedule so far with the addition of the two Harvard matches to start the season. Sprinkle in a few gems out east (CC, NEC, more EIVA would be ideal). So that means for Hawaii: Thu, Mar 13 - Ball State Fri, Mar 14 - Penn State Sat, Mar 15 - USC

On the flip side that’s what we said last year and it ended up being Ranks 1, 3, 5 so who knows.

Ball St. is likely to be at or near the top of the MIVA, Penn St. is a perennial at the top of EIVA, and USC is talented enough to win any match and overdue to start playing consistently to their potential. High odds that three of the four at Outrigger make the NCAAT.

Hawaii was part of that 1, 3, 5 at the time of the tourney and Lewis was 15.
At the time it seemed like a pretty strong tourney, but by the end of the season a sweep of GCU and win in 5 over UCI wasn't enough to get Hawaii in the tourney.
This years' tourney might be better should all three teams lose to Hawaii and go on to win their conferences auto-bid (which would be a compelling argument should Hawaii again finish 3rd in conference), but i don't think many people would expect USC to win considering who UCLA has returning.

They've had some good recruiting classes so I expect them to better this year if the coaching can improve.

UCLA will have a new coaching staff though. It’s hard to predict how good the new coach is…especially replacing the former HC of the US NT.

What? Where did you hear that? I find it odd that he would cut players in the middle of the year. the oos podcast bro. Keoni revealed ALL the drama behind the scenes! Apparently Charlie said something along the lines as "less is more"... They need to fix the volleyball culture because you could see it falling apart. Ottmar was let go "cut" in early Feb. Spyros, as captain was told before the player meeting and pleaded on Ottmars behalf to no avail. He called Ottmar and told him early so he wouldn't be blindsided. Ottmar was told they'd help him find a place to transfer but less means more reps was something heard by the remaining team just after the "cut". Unfortunately, Spyros got hurt the next week and they didn't have a legit B side for a lot of the rest of the season because of the cut and other injuries, illnesses, etc. They never invited Ottmar back to the gym after Spyros was hurt despite rumors. He entered late in two matches before the cut so they essentially burned his Sophomore season and left him dangling for the rest of the school year without allowing him to be with his best friends or stay prepared for the 2025 season. This was cold blooded. Two of Ottmars roommates were starting seniors. This affected every teammate as Keoni mentioned. A Cali club director said "mid season cut?!?! Not even Nygaard would do that".

True enough- you can't underestimate the value of coaching in men's volleyball where pretty much every team has their share of great athletes, fab 50s, international stars etc. It is a far more even landscape with far more potential for upsets than the women's tourneys. The point I was trying to make is that, while the tourney may not be as strong as it has in some years (we've had a few years where #1, #2 and #3 were here) it's unlikely we will see a tourney that would be strong enough to make or break the Hawaii tourney fate, which i think is what a lot of the fans would deemed a strong field. It is still one of the toughest fields in men's volleyball (and this year probably won't be much different), but it's just doubtful it would carry that heavy a weight in determining post season fates. It will probably help determine which conference is better and therefore gets an extra berth, but the head-to-head doesn't seem to carry as much weight.

It’s unfortunate the way everything played out last season but at this point we all just need to move forward. We have to remember Coach Wade made the best decision at the time. Can’t wait for this upcoming season. Should be a good one.

If we are going to be that way, then "hey Charlie Wade." This was a downright terrible move from Wade. It is completely unfair to cut a player who was bought in and beloved by his teammate after sacrificing his eligibility. And Hawaii was likely worse off because of it, not because of a loss of elite skill level but because positive culture guys matter in a practice gym. Wade could have accomplished everything he wanted to in practice and still had him dressed and participating in some capacity, even if not in 6v6 scrimmages. Ottmar was let go "cut" in early Feb. Spyros, as captain was told before the player meeting and pleaded on Ottmars behalf to no avail. He called Ottmar and told him early so he wouldn't be blindsided.
