Sophie Summers Grad Transfer from Washington Great news for the team. She is a decent player, and they need it.

Sophie Summers Grad Transfer from Washington This feels like one of those odd cases where it really could just be a graduate school enrollee. She finished her undergrad degree as of the 2022-2023 academic year (we are currently in the 2023-2024 academic year) - wasn't here for the 2023 fall season. She's not really "transferring" from Washington. She’s still a graduate transfer. Grad transfer.

She was a true redshirt in 2019, lettered 2020-21, 21, and 22. Can’t recall how the NCAA treated pre-COVID season redshirts. If she can get back into playing form quickly this is a much needed experienced MB. If they can add Buse Hassan things won’t look so bleak. However, I think Trubey could have developed into a monster opposite so it’s too bad they couldn’t keep her.

Brutal. Nollan is having a rough few months. Northwestern now has 1 middle for 2024. Losing Trubey is insult to injury. Yes, this one totally hurts as they are in need of players. I wonder why they didn't give her a scholarship since they have less than 12 players at this time. Any thoughts? At this point, Nollan should start considering players that are willing to play for him and can be accepted to the high academic standard of Northwestern, over talent. The team clearly needs players that can buy into his program a lot more than talent at this point. There are still some MB's and OH's left in the portal, although mostly are inexperienced or undersized for BIG10. The team also needs one or two DS/L players since they only have one true DS/L. Talent is pretty critical if you are trying to build a winning program. More players are still in the portal, so there could be a few more surprise additions – but it's getting late. Losing Trubey isn't great because she has a lot of upside and has B1G size. But, Summers is the better get now since she has a lot of experience and is more athletic (note: she didn't play anywhere last year and sounds like she was probably done playing but some stars aligned that led her to NU). Not sure about the status of USF's Buse Hazan, but that would give them a terminator on the left and allow Randorf to play opposite where she's more effective. They definitely could use an extra DS/L, but they have very capable defenders in Navarette and Wright who both started and played 3-Ros in their rookie seasons.

Agree with you that Sophie Summers is a decent, experienced player, and hope that she can still keep up mentally and physically after 1 year hiatus. If they can get Buse, I think she will be the OH1. Who do you think will be the OH2 based on the current list? They still list Wright as an OH although she has played mostly backrow. Did you recall if she ever played in the front row last year?

She’s been a DS for NU and will continue to be. Randorf was All-B1G frosh as an opposite and last her starting spot on the left as a sophomore after struggling mightily. They are better with her back on the right as a 3-rotation attacker.

Good for her, but surprising Stanford wanted her. She just wasn’t that impressive to me as a B1G middle, and definitely not the caliber of Stanford middles. Strange year!

The key is whether the redshirt year counts as part of the 6 year window which she has in order to complete her 4 years of eligibility (plus the COVID year). I think it does.

NCAA adjusted the window to 6 years to play 4 seasons, but there have certainly been waivers, but maybe just for injury. I think Kayla Caffey was one, as she played 5 years in 7 seasons: 2022 - Texas (COVID-Sr) 2021 - Nebraska (R-Sr) 2020-21 - Nebraska (R-Jr) 2019 - Mizzou (R-Soph) 2018 - Mizzou (Medical Redshirt) 2017 - Mezzo (R-Fr) 2016 - Mezzo (Redshirt)

All these Academic Prestige switchups, but good for her It seems these girls only leave NU for more academic prestige…hard to argue
