WCC starts another year with different teams. Lost BYU a year ago, and this year add Oregon State and Washington State for 2 years. Then next year Seattle and GCU. Will be an interesting year for OSU and WSU to compete in this conference. I suspect OSU will do pretty well, while WSU is in a rebuilding year, so likely will finish in the bottom tier.

Did anyone catch any spring games? I saw OSU play, and they look pretty good. The addition of Hester, Light being healthy and able to play again this year, and a strong freshman libero/DS will be benefiting this team.

I'm hoping San Diego gets back to their winning ways and makes the tournament again. I think they have some good new pieces joining the team and I'm interested in seeing how they all work together.

My concern is the pins and setter spots. Will they be strong enough there? Pepperdine and LMU seem to retain and/or transfer in some good strengths.

Yeah setter is still a question mark, but I think there are enough options on the pins where someone will hopefully emerge as a go-to

Okay. Who gave the sympathy votes to Gonzaga and Portland lol. They were the bottom two teams last season. For their sakes, they hope they can improve from those positions though.

Looking at the schedule release it looks like the league has modified the approach in order to accommodate WSU and OSU. No longer guaranteed to play every team twice which could create some RPI and Conference race winners and losers. Based on past results LMU and Pepp only playing Portland and Gonzaga 1x as example should be good for RPI but tougher for conference W/L padding.

2024 Schedule -here’s the breakdown of which teams play each other only once during conference play. Looks like it’s broken into 3 groupings: 1. Oregon State/ Saint Mary’s / Pacific play each other only once 2. Santa Clara & San Francisco play San Diego & Washington State each only once 3. Gonzaga & Portland play LMU & Pepperdine each only once
We’ll see how this plays out- top teams playing lower teams once can help RPI (and if they can actually win some non conf matches this year).

I'm just realizing that the Pac2 get more games in California now than they did in the Pac 12.

I actually did see them play in the spring and I am afraid that I can't agree with your observation. I saw them in Eugene and they would have been beaten by an NAIA school had they not finished the set due to a setter injury. They have lost their most potent attacker and while the WCC will be a significantly easier conference than the Pac 12 I think they will do well to make top 5.

They have lost their most potent attacker and while the WCC will be a significantly easier conference than the Pac 12 I think they will do well to make top 5. Are you basing your assessment on that one set? Because I saw them play three different weekends, beating a good defensive team in Portland State 3-1 the weekend before, and then the following weekend after the match you saw, beat UW 3-0, and then took a set off the Ducks 1-2. That same NAIA school you mentioned also beat Portland State 2-1 and took a set off of the Ducks, so that one set they lost to them, and then had to stop due to the setter getting injured, is not a total assessment that looks at their current level. That NAIA team would beat many teams in the WCC in my opinion.
Also, yes, Vernon has graduated, but Light sat out last year and hits the ball very well, and the addition of Hester, who also has a heavy arm, makes them stronger. I would venture to say that OSU's team last year would have finished in the top 3 or 4 of the WCC, and I suspect OSU will finish top 3 if not top 2 this year, but I guess we will see. All depends on how a couple of the freshmen coming in play, and how the changes in the other top teams in the WCC do, as they also lost pieces from their teams last year. I expect Pepperdine, San Diego, and LMU all to be teams that play towards the top.

Added the composite schedule with link to stats/streams on the 2nd post, and info on one match that will be on ESPNU with WSU vs. Pepperdine.
