* (Massey Ranking of the opponent) This was a good week for the Summit! Even the results not highlighted in this post were pretty good, overall. In the other matches, Summit teams were beating who they should beat, and losing to very good teams. I have to imagine the Summit RPI potential just went up a notch or two! I haven't mentioned SDSU much yet, because their schedule was relatively weak. That having been said, they are undefeated, and likely will out-perform preseason expectations. Maybe ending up in the top tier? They at minimum should be a lock for the Summit tournament with the way they have been playing. And don't look now, but St. Thomas looks to make some progress getting out of the bottom tier this year. Could they make the 6-team Summit tournament? Stay tuned!

One more week to establish the RPI potential of the conference before we all start beating up on each other. Would love to see an at-large bid someday. Maybe this year?

INO, The only team that might has any chance at an at-large this year is South Dakota, but that chance is probably close to zero. I've watched South Dakota, St. Thomas, Denver, and Omaha play at least twice. From my eye test, the Yotes of South Dakota are currently playing the best, followed by St. Thomas. I haven't seen the SDSU Jackrabbits play yet this year.

South Dakota has a real shot depending on who finishes T50: Mizzou, Iowa State, UTEP could all be quality wins.
South Dakota State played cupcakes mostly, they shouldn’t have a real shot.
How did South Dakota lose so badly to Northern Kentucky? That one has me dumbfounded.
Also, this week is Avery Van Hook’s debut on my fantasy team. I’m currently first place in the league and play the 2nd and 3rd place teams in the league this week… so I need her to show up! Go Yotes!

How did South Dakota lose so badly to Northern Kentucky? That one has me dumbfounded. Coach W basically said it was blocking errors on defense (two starting freshmen) and miscommunication on offense. They seem to have figured that out recently, and now with Lauren Medeck taking over the 6-rotation hitter spot, they have a very talented, but very youthful lineup. So I won't be surprised to see some freshman mistakes and inconsistency (errors) pop up here and there through the season. There is experience on the team, but you can't keep talent off the court. Avery Van Hook has been really good, too. Better than her freshman season last year. Good dig and block numbers to go with conference-leading assist numbers. Wish she had a few more aces, but that's the whole team. I think she will do well in your fantasy league. The only thing that might be bad for you is if there are 5-set matches against Iowa or Drake. Don't be fooled by Omaha, IMO they do this every year. Back-breaking non-con, and they struggle through it, not pulling off upsets ... not looking particularly good... then the conference season hits, Buttermore makes some adjustments, and they are right back in the race. He's a good coach. That team has size and talent, too. He has struggled to find the right setter lately, though. I certainly won't underestimate them.

Called it: Omaha over a top-60 UNC team 3-1. Could be a two or 3-team horse race again in this league….

Kali Jurgensmeier is that girl, she might be gunning for Summit POY Jurgensmeier was Summit League Freshman of the year two years ago at Right Side. Last year, she was switched back to her high school position of OH. She got injured early in the season, then returned late in the year at RS. Last Spring Coach Buttermore said that she will stay at RS and last year's very good RS, Amanda Hardt, was moved to OH. Hardt IMO, played her best match at OH today, although she is still somewhat raw after being an MB in high school.

Tommies have done about as much as they could to help the non-conf record and rpi base for the Summit League. More wins so far this season than all last year.
And N.Dakota gets their second match win for the weekend, sweeping Green Bay. They lost to Minnesota, but beat Green Bay and Chicago State.

* (Massey Ranking of the opponent) * must win at least a set for a "good loss" I think its fairly clear at this point that USD and Denver should be pretty good in conference play. I still think that Omaha is also still a top-3 team, but it's hard to compare their daunting schedule with the rest of the conference. SDSU, St Thomas and North Dakota have all had a very successful non-conference season, relative to their schedules. I think all three will probably end up improving their final standings in conference play! Has SDSU entered the top-tier? Will UST and UND be at the top of the middle tier? Time will tell. NDSU has been decently average, but where will they end up? Lord only knows. I think they should still be in the middle tier, but I don't know where. KC clearly has under-performed so far. What is going on there? They are looking like a solid 8th-best Summit team right now. Can they turn it around? ORU is not surprisingly at the bottom.

My guess at the end of non-con season for final standings:
top tier 1A South Dakota 1B Omaha 3 Denver
Middle tier 4 SDSU 5 North Dakota 6 St Thomas 7 NDSU
Bottom Tier 8 KC 9 ORU
So that represents SDSU, UND and St Thomas all moving up 2 spots in standings compared to last year. Denver moves down 1, NDSU moves down 2, and KC drops like a rock.
