This is a slightly different post.
Nate Higgins who was a setter for Waukesha West (graduated in 2023), Milwaukee Sting and Poolstars Italy; had a swimming accident on 6/28/24 while on family vacation in Indiana. He dove into a lake that was only 2 feet after getting hot from “peppering” with his girlfriend Hazel.
Waukesha West is retiring his jersey on Monday, 10/7/24. Game starts at 6:30pm and the celebration is at 6pm. West plays Fusion. He is now paralyzed in an electric wheelchair but has use of his right arm.
Nate LOVES volleyball - he will keep doing everything he can to support his passion from the chair.
He started coaching this past week with his sister’s team JV girls Cambridge high school volleyball team.
It would mean the world to see support and pack the gym .

Still lots of up & down performances by many of the top 20 teams this past week, but surprising West only fell one spot after losing to CMH, Cadarburg & Tosa East last week. Nicolet staying in top 10 after losing to Pius on Saturday (looks like rematch dual tonight). Homestead done well this past week (some match results missing from WSN) including beating Madison Memorial in 4 last night.

I will say the last two weeks voting for the top 10 has probably been the hardest thing to look at in years. You could make arguments for every team to be moved up or down (Homestead beat Cedarburg how are they behind them, Marquette beat Middleton twice how are they behind them, Nicolet has split with Waukesha West winning in 2 and losing in 3). One of the pools at Tosa East invite has the current #1 and #2 teams in the state in it. Sometimes you want to try new line ups out against a team and well it does not work out. Then you get the #8 team in the state as a reward for it. Its a great problem to have in the state, so many great pool play matches and having to bring it every match. I do feel bad for some of the bench players across the state who have probably not gotten as much playing time as previously.
Germantown, Marquette, Cedarburg, Hamilton, Nicolet, Madison Memorial, CMH, Beast and Muskego all at Germantown this weekend. Throw in Arrowhead and Indian Trailssssss, and you got another fun job of voting on Sunday afternoon.
Next week Nicolet gets Cedarburg on Monday and Homestead on Wednesday. Fun little week there coming off Germantown tournament on Saturday.
Volleyball in this state is awesome this year. Simple as that.

Also to clarify I am not saying those teams dont deserve the spots they were given or that I voted that way. I was stating that voting for the top 10 is very difficult no matter how much you follow as there is a ton of parity around the state this year. Is there an odds on favorite to win state? Who knows Germantown would probably lead that but are also in a sectional that right now features the #1, #4, #7 and #10 team in the state plus WFB who has received votes and took Cedarburg to 5 the other night. The next month should be pretty fun.

This year the talent is so close I do not envy the coaches and their weekly vote. With that said now that there is a boys coaches committee can one of those coaches weigh in on getting rid of regional representation?
Sectional 3 has Cedarburg, Germantown, Homestead, and Nicolet who are all top tier talented teams this year. Sectional 4 has Arrowhead, CMH, Hamilton, and Waukesha West who all look promising as well. Sectionals 1, 2, and 6 all have one team that is the clear favorite (Kimberly, Middleton, Marquette) and then one or two teams that might challenge them a little bit. Sectional 1 is going finally get a mix up by the looks of it. Appleton North lost to Fondy and Kimberly already, Kaukauna does not look very strong this year, Neenah is improving. Sectional 2 has Memorial and West playing ok but not up to par with Middleton. 6 will have Marquette play BEast or Tosa East in their final and should win. Sectionals 5, 7, and 8 will not provide anything but fodder for state. Franklin and New Berlin are the only two that can maybe compete and they're in the same sectional!
Something needs to change so that we can finally get the actual top 8 teams at state.

Something needs to change so that we can finally get the actual top 8 teams at state. The WIAA has ZERO desire for a balanced/seeded/distributed state tournament. They care only for regional representation. That will not change. That being said, we'll still likely bring it up when we're there for the annual volleyball coaches' advisory meeting on Nov 20. We've brought it up many times before, as have other sports with similarly imbalanced sectionals, but the WIAA is very focused on the regional aspect. Other priorities that we have are switching to the same ball used in men's college and club, moving the state tournament back to Milwaukee (or some central location), and possibly moving boys volleyball to be a spring sport (I say possibly because this one has mixed support, as opposed to the first 2 which are pretty unanimous among boys coaches).

I think even if they had a way to seed (rank) the sectionals, then have 2 teams from the sectional semi-finals play cross-sectional matches that would at least allow 2 teams from the stronger sectionals to advance. Just a thought. I doubt spring volleyball would pass. Some schools don't want to take away the spring sports from volleyball players (although football & soccer, cross country, etc. would be able to play VB), and schools don't want to give up spring gym time due to outdoor sports needing the gyms in the spring before the snow melts or when fields are unavailable due to rain. I think eventually we'll get there, but not in the next couple of years.

Which states use the NCAA / club ball? In CA they use a terrible ball and seem to switch it every few years to a different model of baically the same ball. It is more similar to the girls ball. I assumed they do this because schools want to use the same balls for boys and girls... and there are some kick backs going to the CIF decision makers by the ball manufacturers so schools have to buy lots of crappy overpriced balls they can't sell to anyone else. Most all boys and mens players seem to prefer the NCAA Molten over all others, I don't understand why it can't be adopted by all. What do women and women's coaches think of that ball? I think it would speed the game up in girls and women's and make attacks more terminal... something I think would benefit the game, people do love the long rallys though.

Which states use the NCAA / club ball? None yet that I know of. It’s an NFHS rule that the ball can’t be textured.
