I had hoped Cal Poly would show out better this weekend. The talent is there to beat good teams, but they were not able to do so.

Not gonna happen. All you need to know is the difference in stipend money and NIL. there's the Dartmouth case. now Ivy League does not provide athletic scholarships....wink, wink at some point the Big West or all other conferences have to decide between belonging to the NCAA is worthwhile anymore. 5 more years of championship teams that get disbanded every year as players jump ship is something I'm not sure fans/boosters can tolerate indefinitely. It's also tough to not belong to D1 because they all want to be D1, but D1 is ....over!. the NCAA will be what the P4 (or whatever they morph into over the next 10 years we are not close to being 'done' with what that profressional organization monstrosity will be) demands they be. At some point the other 250 -300 or so colleges need to assess if it's time to just get the heck out of there. There isn't a single one of the non P4 that wants to have their athletes classified as employees, and if forced to, will probably downscale or just drop out of competitive sports as we know it. Might be a relatively easy decision for Big West schools. For those in a conference like the Mountain West, where they have 40-50000 person football stadiums and are more P4 -like without a $40-50 mil/year TV contract, who knows, they will really be in purgatory It might be the demise of college MVB as we know it in 5-10 years, aside from some 6 team P4/D1 league of BYU, UCLA, Stan, OSU, PSU, USC who can go F themselves and play each other 5 times each year and call whoever they want a national champion. but I digress. If I was the commish of hte Big West, I'd call the Ivy League, the Missouri Valley Conference, maybe a couple others like conferences and say. "screw this, let's form a new organization of 80 schools, and stop the BS". or maybe not, probably continue to suffer a slow miserable decline as peons of the P4 I did not see this. You are on to something and I fear...correct.

UC Irvine & Idaho State tied 1-1 Idaho State head coach wearing slippers/flipflops and it matches him so well I thought he was walking around barefoot. UCI lost in 5. Tough one and I heard the gym doesn’t have AC! No excuses though. I was impressed by Smith being doing stuff with the junk sets…she only actually made 1 error the rest was from setting errors. Also liked Riedl on the right, a dynamic duo! The other outsides and middles gotta figure it out or else it’s going to be a lot of 5th sets for UCI this weekend

However, with only one win last week and a win/loss record similar to past teams at this point in the season, I can't say I'm disappointed. Maybe it's because I don't know what to expect from the new coach and a team full of transfers. I'm hoping for the best for the Matadors.

But UCI and UCSB both pull off the reverse sweep and win in 5!
Huge comebacks for the Big West!

- Now Hawaii's RPI will probably jump into the top 100. They beat a good San Diego team who is just winless at the moment. Plus they defeated Pepperdine in 5 just Sunday morning.
Big West Fig Stats RPI 9/7/24
46. Cal Poly 48. UCI 54. UCSB 147. UCSD 170. UCD
202. CSU Bakersfield 239. Long Beach St.
257. CSUN 265. Cal St. Fullerton 286. Hawaii (2-1) 298. UC Riverside
UCI's (3-2) Record with Fig stats RPI
57. New Mexico (5-1) road win 3-0 92. Portland (5-1) home win 3-2 111. Idaho St. (4-2) home loss 2-3 136. Tulane (3-3) loss 2-3 170. North Dakota (2-3) win 3-1

All RPI calculations need about four weeks of results to be even modestly worth the effort of discussion, including RPI Futures. NCAA typically won't publish them until around conference start.

RPI is bad enough, RPI before week 5 is meaningless, and there's no semblance of real SOS to it at this time. RPI is good for a good laugh. Massey factors set scores and SOS much better. Massey Power Ratings are best, even then need week 3 to be complete to get enough matches, Massey still doesn't deal with the Hawaii schedule/time well, has been that way for years, lol masseyratings.com/cvol/ncaa-d1/ratings
