UCI immediately switched to playing a 5-2 with talented freshman setter Jessica Bates, CIF Div. 2 Player of the Year, and it was smooth sailing from there. UCI won the next three sets 25-19 (+19,-19,-19,-19). UNBELIEVABLE! The first day of matches and UCI's talented freshman setter Jessica Bates gets injured against Tulane. I thought UCI could have beaten Tulane in 4 sets if not for the devastating injury. I had Bates in the running for Freshman of the Week the way she helped UCI beat North Dakota. Bates played setter in a 5-2 for 3 sets and dished out 18 assists with 9 digs and 2 aces in the ND win. She led UCI with 19 assists, plus 6 digs and 1 ace late in the 3rd set when she fell and needed to be carried off the court vs The Green Wave.
Bates needed to be pushed around in a wheel chair when the teams traded court sides so who knows if she will be back this season.

Maybe the UCI team rallied around the devastating injury but UCI came out on a mission today.
UCI dominated New Mexico 25-16, 25-14, 25-18 to sweep the lobos in front of 858 in their home court.
UCI senior MB2 Ofure Iselen stepped up having 7 kills in 13 attempts, hitting 0.462 plus 8 blocks.
UCI junior OH2 Kendra MacDonald also stepped up having 8 kills hitting 0.300 with 13 digs and 2 blocks.

#4 Pitt sweeps Long Beach St. 3-0(-12,-9,-20).
Long Beach St. and #4 Pitt played in front of SEVENTY-EIGHT fans. assuming 40 players and coaches, 4 refs, scorekeeper, 3 facility types and 2 in the concession stands, that means 28 people actually paid to watch the match in Eugene

South Florida finished last season with a RPI of 87 and was picked 3rd in the AAC pre-season poll.
So nice win for the gauchos.
