Gimme a break. These athletes are paid to play, and if they're heckled while doing it, so be it. They can do it in pro sports, so why not college? There are bigger problems in the world.

Are you kidding me? We're not just talking about typical "heckling" here...we're talking foul language being used, horrendous remarks about girls bodies etc. That's what I'm talking about. Probably the worst "pro" sport in comparison to what you hear there I would say would be hockey! GIVE ME A BREAK!!! I can't believe you would even make a comment like that?!! With attitudes like yours, it's a prime example of their attitudes! ABSURD!!

"Standing right next to the court and booing"? Uh - yeah - like that's never happened before in the history of college athletics? I'd be concerned if it were someone wandering onto the court between points (I've actually seen that) but booing players during intros is rather tame stuff. The article doesn't get into specifics, but I've heard of some crazy stuff (calling certain players "Sasquatch"), and the players I've asked said they work hard at zeroing out the hecklers. I've even seen a college player watch men's VB and make some remarks about a particular player's **ahem** assets.

OK..not just a matter of just booing....if you've been there many would know what i'm talking about. I must say, the responses thus far just proove how demanged our society has become..pretty sad anymore. no..disgusting is more the word for it. surprisingly enuf, most people on these boards are just that...parents...you would think there would be some decency required by most, but apparently ..anything goes anymore anyway. talk on. i've stated my opinion on this topic, and believe me, i do blame the refs, ncaa, ad, and coaches for not taking a stand. STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING...prime example of the American way today...we've fallen...and we can't get up!! It's very sad. It's not about the "sport" anymore. It's about the almighty $$$. It's not fun anymore.
Big comparison between Nebraska fans and Mizzou fans...Nebraska fans are respectful of both teams on the floor. You don't see that there. thx Nebraska for your wondeful example of sportsmanship.

So go write your complaints to the NCAA, Officials chairperson, Missouri AD and the Missouri coach. If you want it to change, go to where YOU think the problems are. It's not like posting it on here is going to get you want you want.

oh... and I agree that sports are now about the almighty $$$. That's what happens when an athlete gets $50K+ for his/her scholarships.

Certain home crowds are tougher to deal with. I have not traveled much to other schools, but for USC, I think the Pauley Pavilion (UCLA) is one place where the team has to deal with the heckling from the boisterous fans in end seats (very close to the opposing team's bench and the servers) -- you got the UCLA men vball team dressed up in weird costumes and shouting/heckling a mere 1 to 3 feets away from the servers. I am sure it is all in good taste and fun (couldn't hear what was said), and I thought the USC team had always dealt well...in certain aspects, they smiled at the heckling and sometimes deliberately standing close to the end seats (instead of shying away) to instigate the hecklers (or rather showing that the hecklers couldn't get into the head of the players).
Last year at USC/UCLA game at USC, the UCLA men vball team came in at end of game 1 and stood very close behind to USC bench and sidelines, no doubt to disrupt the team. I think someone called in the university police who came into the Lyon Center and shooed away the UCLA men vball players away from USC's bench and told them to seat in the bleachers, and there were 2 police officers standing close by throughout the rest of the match.
Playing in conference matches, teams have to expect hostile reactions from the crowd. If inappropriate remarks are made, I'm sure the coaches can complain to the refs to take actions.

I've heard parents say far worse to their own children! You've heard say far worse than what to their own children? Are you advocating that anything that parents do or say to their children ought to be allowed by volleyball (or any sport for that matter) fans?

NEws flash poindexter, the overwhelming majority of us haven't been to a Missouri volleyball game, so unless you're willing to pony up with specific quotes, these vague allegations of "bad stuff" will soon drop off the radar much like whatever innuendo someone tried to start about Jamie Houston. Expecting us to join in your kvetching with no proof just makes you look like a putz.

This has got to be the stupidist reason I have ever heard. I hope you don't call yourself a fan of any sport because you suck. OK, I'll admit that I am a lousy heckler because I have had no practice at it but I'll bet you got a little defensive at my comments. Why should players get heckled just because they are on scholarship. They are doing the best they can to represent their school and volleyball in general and there is no reason they should have to put up with that sort of garbage. When you start lowering your standards to what pro fans, it is all downhill from there. Thank you volley2004 for complimenting Nebraska fans. We do take pride in our appreciation of good volleyball, regardless of which side of the net it is coming from. In my MANY years of attending Husker VB matches, I have only heard booing or heckling of the opposite players two times in the Coliseum ... both times, they were opponent's fans heckling our players. If Husker fans ever start stooping to that behavior, I'll quit attending the matches.

Far worse than what?
Typical teasing? Heckling them when they're participating in athletics? Berating their children by making fun of their physical appearance?
Just because a parent does or says something to their own children doesn't make the behavior excusable or reasonable to expect at a sporting event.

This is post is completely laughable and absurd... but completely entertaining since people, including a few Missouri fans, seem to have problems with Missouri's fans sitting in two rows of chairs at the end of the court. However, as a member of the student section, I can say that nothing said in the student section proves how damaged our society nor is really unexpected given the context of a college sporting competition. Your caps-lock-all-about-the-money outrage probably does more damage to society. Engle says this about Missouri: "When we went to Mizzou I was surprised, because the announcer called out your name and people booed," Engle said. "There were people that have no life and were standing right up next to the court and saying things that weren't really that nice. Maybe it was me just being a freshman, but it got to me a little bit more than it should have." I wonder if she'd say the same about her student section, the Longhorn Hellraisers www.texassports.com/mainpages/vb_pages/2003_04/005_october/100703_30.html. Do they have "no life" too? The student section is supposed to get to teams. This is normal part of college athletics, period. Get over it. Any elite athlete knows to expect this from student sections. I'm glad to see it and would like to see more of a competitive atmosphere in volleyball crowds elsewhere. Have you ever been to a mens college basketball game? Or do you have different standards for women's sports? Are they too precious? Considering 2 of 30 of your posts on this forum, you must think so. "So, do you think these girls have a serious boyfriend? Heck. at least sorry to say jen has time on her hands now to date again. I don't know, but it's kinda funny and as you said uncanny how alike they both look. I know one thing. Jen's pigtail braids she wore all year was cute. Made her look pretty classy on the court. She should keep that style. I think texas sports website said her teammate Armstrong did her hair before each match. Was let down to see she didnt wear it like that for the match against Hawaii. Maybe that was her good luck charm. Hope she continues that next year though. I would add a pic of it here but can't figure the dern thing out. You can go to texasphotostore.com to see some pics there."I think most girls wear a little mascara on their eyes. However, I've watched a lot of volleyball thru the years and IMHO I think the most gorgeous volleyball player since Gabriel Reese has got to be Jen Christian. If anyone saw her on TV this year, I think you'd have to admit this. She would make a beautiful model. I've seen her a couple times in Austin with her hair down, she is breathtaking to say the least!
