Cindy Luis was on the radio a while ago, she said that while she has heard nothing "on the record" about Keefe's injury it appears she is out for the season and it will require another surgery.
This means that the entire 2004 recruting class is out for the season due to injuries. The team just can't seem to get a break on the injury front this season. I agree it would be a minor miracle for them to make it the regional this year.

Gosh another one... This Wahine team is very prone to injury huh? (I'm hoping for no injuries at Las Cruces *crosses fingers*) I have to blame Keefe's injury solely on travel and fatigue. To be sitting on a plane for hours, and to arrive on ground six hours before having to compete in any sport is ridiculous. Hawaii obviously struggled because of this. They probably did their warm-ups and stretches, but there's no solution to a tired, jet-lagged body. What a shame. I give these student-athletes a load of credit for putting up with traveling, missing school, doing homework and studying on the road. It's a tough life for them! About NMSU, they are a very solid volleyball team. However, the Wahine are just as solid. With the exception of injury, Hawaii definitely has a slight edge, physically and mentally. NMSU was up on them at Las Cruces last year, and they just could not put the Wahine away. Hopefully, Mason, Houston, and Kaufman can put up some huge kill numbers and the Hawaii block has to show up (you can do it Kari and Juli!!!). Good luck to both teams and it should be a real interesting match

Keefe is a big loss for Hawaii. I wonder if Shoji would ever consider unredshirting Arnott? Anyway, Kaufman and Thurlby are both formiddable RS reserves. Personally I would like to see Kaufman start because of her leaping ability. When she gets a good set from KK she can put it down. I think this is what Hawaii's going to need on offense. They need to put balls away. So here we are... in 48 hrs. NMSU. This is the match of the year so far for the Wahine. Possibly the WAC title could be on the line. Serving and Passing will probably be the most critical aspect of the game for the Wahine because both teams seem to be equally balanced. Let's hope Kaufman can pick up some of the slack missed from blocking. Allen and Borden are two very good attackers, and need to be slowed down at the least. KK needs to really pick up in connecting with all hittters. Does anyone know if there will be altitude in Las Cruces? [/qu totally agree on kaufman...hawaii is pretty much lacking in offensive output on the rightside...kaufman provides more offensive potential Here we go again with the 'lacking in offensive output on the rightside'. When your offense is designed in such a way that the rightside sees a limited amount of sets, you're going to get less offensive output. It's not the players, it's the system. Every right side player at Hawaii has taken a knock for this reason with the possible exception of Willoughby and Wilton. Actually, even back then we wished that they would've set the right side more often. It's not just that Mason is more comfortable on the left that has caused her kpg to go up. It's because she is no longer on the right, where the sets are limited ... You have a point to some degree...however when hittle or houston is set on the rightside there chances of getting a kill as oppose to keefe was much greater, and its the same system. Hawaii just likes to put their weakest hitter there. I hope Sealy does bring the mens aspect of the game to the wahine...if you look at the mens team their top hitters are always the opposite

I have a feeling NMSU will take advantage of this unfortunate loss and win tomorrow night.

For NMSU, this will be a critical match for their future. If they win, they can really show Hawaii's weaknesses and might be able to show that Hawaii is beatable by WAC teams. It can be something for them to build on in the future. However, if they don't win, that can be an absolute confidence killer. Hawaii only has 6 hitters available counting the back up setter (and not counting Blood as we don't know if she has flown out or not. 2 projected starters for 2006 are out, along with another right side hitter and one player redshirting. Compared to the rest of the WAC, Hawaii will be loaded for the next few years. Under certain plausible assumptions, everyone will return in 2007 aside from Kamanao and Mason. Houston and Hittle will be around to 2008. If there was a time to beat Hawaii, this is the year. If not, that sense of Hawaii being invinsible to WAC teams will only grow stronger.

Prior to this year, when was the last time a Wahine had a season ending injury? I don't recall one recently, mostly sprained ankles. Hopefully, Keefes injury isn't too bad, but by everything I have read, it doesn't look good. They say bad things happen in 3's so hopefully this is it for the Wahine.
I think barring any more injuries, the Wahine will still make it to the regionals. No doubt in my mind.

I have a feeling NMSU will take advantage of this unfortunate loss and win tomorrow night. Even I have to pipe in on this one. Volleyball is a game of emotion as well as skill. I truly believe the Wahine have a lot of emotion going into this match. They are still a very talented team. They WANT this victory. Will it be easy? No. But they CAN and WILL rise to the occasion. You know, the "Win one for the Gipper/Keefe" strategy.

I like the fact that the newspaper stated Kaufman also played on the left side(finally)......I remember when Willougby was right side/middle as a freshman but was on the left as a sophomore.
For this year Kaufman will be fine on the right, her offense is great, but her upside is huge I can see her on the left starting in the future.
Unfortunate for Keefe...........man the left side is getting thin for UH.....anyone will watch the webcast tomorrow I'm thinking of it!

However, if they don't win, that can be an absolute confidence killer. I'm going to disagree with you. Will it kill our confidence us if we lose? No. This is a number 11 ranked team for crying out loud. We've come a long way in the last year or so. I think we're going to challenge Hawaii in every aspect - as long as the team keeps their head on straight and not let the 'bows get to them - and they'll challenge us in every aspect. Should we lose, it'll be a downer of course but the season isn't over. One game at a time.

All I can say is we will see what happens tomorrow. Gosh ... I still think this is ridiculous. I thought last season was bad with Hittle and Mason's ankle injuries, but it's nothing compared to this year.
It's kind of ironic that the years the Wahine DIDNT have depth there were no injuries. Remember in 2001 when the Wahine only had Willoughby, Duggins, Tano, Gustin, and Carey (if you can count her as one) as the hitters, none of them were hurt all through out the season and there was only a couple backups in Nikolic and Eckmier.
Then in 2002 there was only Willoughby, Kahumoku, Duggins, Tano, Gustin, Lundqvist, and Eckmier, yet they were all healthy.
Fast forward to this season where there are a dozen hitters and three season-ending injuries go down.
Weird.

Ashley Watanabe had a season ending injury in 2004 which probably made the difference in the Hawaii-v-Wisconsin Regional semi. .... After the beginning of this season, you can appreciate how important Boogaard and Watanabe's passing was to the team in 04 and 05. Take them out, and it's a very, very different team.

For the life of me, I cannot remember what Karin Lundquist did when she tore her ACL... did she play on it? She's playing in the FIVB beach tour now, and doing decent.... how bad does one really need their ACL?
