I think this is why they need to get rid of some of them. Because since there is so much each player gets less reps. If there were less of them each player will get more reps and they will be able to improve on their passing and back row play. I guess the risk is they might lose a potentially valuable player. For example, what chance did Jayme Lee have last July/August of breaking the starting lineup? I'd say slim to none based on comments by Shoji and the early season matches. Shoji tried a whole bunch of different peeps at libero before he even dared to put Lee on the floor. And when he did, he found the right girl. Totally by accident. They had no one else who was willing to step up and perform. Had they cut Lee earlier, the Wahine's passing/digging would've been worse than it was.

Good point......but I still think they should cut Woolford if we're going to have Liz on the team and I don't know how her level of play will be at the college level but when I seen this girl play in High School, she is a stud at passing everything in fron of the ten foot line even with tuff jumpers......

Lee, Duggins, Woolford, and Ka'aihue are all the Wahine really need.
I think Lee and Ka'aihue will battle it out for libero, but the other will still see a lot of playing time, subbing in the backrow for a hitter next year.
Duggins may become a situation passer/server ... same with Woolford, with Duggins probably being ahead.
Ong, Kitaguchi, and Recca really don't have a spot next season ... unfortunate but true. If they want to play, they'll have to step up bigtime.
BTW, I would find it very amusing if Shoji brings in more backcourt walkons.

I sort of like the idea of Duggins subbing in for the right side hitter. Kaufman, Keefe, or Thomas (or whoever would be in that position) are all good, but Duggins is the better defender and passer and would also seems to be a good back row attacker. This solidifies the back row but also gives the Wahine a fairly viable option in 3 rotations. It’s definitely not the choice you are going to use at 30-31 but it may be a good set to throw in once a game just to keep the opposing team on their toes. That being said, it will probably be Lee at libero and Ka'aihue may redshirt. Ka’aihue is a great player but may need a year to get a feel for the speed of college volleyball.

Honestly, I doubt Ka'aihue will redshirt. The Wahine lost Mason, who was really their best passer along with Lee. Houston and Duggins were in the passing rotation, but the two were streaky at times. Ka'aihue however, is a stud in the backrow. She can come in and make an immediate impact on the team in regards to passing, defense, and taking care of the ball on free plays. IMO, she is good enough to compete with Lee and I think if Shoji is smart, he'd use her next season to shore up the backrow. But, I suppose if Houston, Duggins, and/or Woolford can bring their game to where Hittle and Lee are at, the Wahine can make it without Kaaihue. But you gotta keep this in mind, Kamana'o made of for the average passing last year. We realy don't know if Brandt or Mafua can. So if I were Shoji, I'd want the best possible backrow players available.

Like others have said the Wahine shouldn't need more than 3 defensive specialists (Lee, Duggins & Ka'aihue). I believe Woolford is going to be a (5th year) senior this coming season. There's no way Shoji's going to cut her if only just because this is her last season and she's been a Wahine for a long time.
It looks to me that only the Libero (whoever eventually wins that position) and 1 other defensive specialist (who will probably regularly sub for the RS hitter) will see significant playing time. I really don't see the Wahine going deeper that 2 defensive specialist, if that. What if, for example, Hittle and Houston play left and Otineru comes back to Hawaii and earns the RS position. Aneli is good enough to play all around and it might be preferable to keep her in since she'll gives the Wahine another hitting option in the back row. Hittle is the Wahine's best passer. Houston has improved a great deal in her passing and she's too valuable as a back row hitter to be subbed out too often with a DS. In this case only the Libero will see a lot of playing time.

I have to say one thing about Woolford. Okay, maybe two. First of all, she is a VERY nice young woman. Secondly, I once asked a UH assistant coach, 'Who is the hardest worker of the Wahine Bunch?' The reply was, "The most dedicated and hardest worker is Raeceen Wolford."

Well if she is the most dedicated and hardest worker of the bunch, then why does she still pass like crapp!.....It just doesn't make any sense to what we're trying to figure out here about our backrow players...Don't get me wrong here people, she might be a really really sweet girl just like it has been stated above but it's so sad to see that much backcourt players with soooooooooooooooo many passing problems and Woolford of all being the veteran of them all by alot more years of expericence then the rest, has not yet shown that she can contribute in a way to get our hitters especially our setter to run that quick and solid offense that Hawai'i is always been known for to push our Wahine's towards a national title........... Do I make any sense here people...........

Do I make any sense here people........... I wouldn't go as far to say that she passes like crap. But personality and work ethic are not the issue. She can be a great person and the hardest worker, but to be straight forward, she hasn't seemed to progress in the way she needed to in order to be the starting libero. She was beat out by a redshirt freshman for the spot. And while its sad to see a veteran player ride the bench, fact remains that in the coaches eyes, the better player is on the court. Again, not a knock against her. But if an underclassmen beats out a veteran player for playing time due to sheer ability, so be it. That means Woolford should be on the bench and Lee should be on the court.

My point about Woolford was not to say that she should start, but merely to point out that she is a great teammate and should definitely not be cut. We all talked about team chemistry during the season, and Woolford is a true team player whether on the court or the sidelines.

Geez, can we please ease up on Woolford? Okay, yes she's not the best and she probably hasn't progressed in the way Shoji and SHE HERSELF wanted to, and she, along with five other players were beat out by a redshirt freshman for the libero position ... but SOMETIMES there is something more valuable than just talent and the ability to make points.
When a player is dedicated to the program and determined to give 100 percent day in and day out, that player becomes just as important as the "franchise" player on the team. Why? Because that player exemplifies everything that a player should. And let me tell you one thing, DEDICATION and HEART has always been the driving force for the Rainbow Wahine over the years, NOT a "quick offense," which I might add, the Wahine do not even run.
And let's be real. Woolford has had her moments. Her greatest strength is her scrappiness. She flies around in the backcourt and can make solid saves. No, that doesn't make up for the fact her passing can be suspect ... but I'm just saying.
She has enough heart to validate her spot on the team. She may not be the best in the backrow, but I am postive Shoji knows.
