With the announcement that charges against the Duke Lacrosse players were dropped, I am wondering whether ollegiate efforts to reign-in boorish athlete behavior gets misconstrued with criminal behavior, and whether there is a rush to judgement, particularly with athletes. On the otherhand, Duke always seems quick to pull the trigger on its players, recollecting a volleyball player several years ago who allegedly was voted off the team for a percieved stronger commitment to a social life than a volleyball life. Moderator Note: This thread is generally off-topic to volleyball, however, its an interesting discussion and its relatively slow, so it can stay, for now.
- Please keep the discussion civil, this is a sensitive topic

Duke, might be wishing they didn't rush to judgment this time. It could and should cost the school some money. It's just to bad that everyone in the media that crucified the 3 boys aren't taken to task for their lack of professionalism in reporting fiction instead of facts. Of course we can thank the politically correct world for that.

Well, they might not be criminals or rapists, but they are still complete dumbasses.
Good thing daddy has alot of money, and friends who know some good lawyers.
Let's go ask their neighbors what fine, upstanding, young men these three Duke dorks were prior to this incident.
Just because they are innocent of this specific crime doesn't automatically make them angels.
P.S. The accuser shouldn't get off so easy either, she should be prosecuted for making false criminal accusations.

Good thing daddy has alot of money, and friends who know some good lawyers. What do you hate everything involving lacrosse so much? You say that like it's THEIR fault some woman decide to make up BS rape charges, and they they deserved to be found guilty if it weren't for "daddy's money."

It's their fault they put themselves in a situation where an incident like this _could_ happen. Bad judgement in the least.

So would you then blame a woman for putting herself in a position to be raped?
Yes the guys were stupid, but as the Libs always ask, is stupid criminal?
A woman once went with Mike Tyson to his hotel room. He was subsequently convicted of rape and sent to prison. She became rich. Is this just a distinction wihout a difference?
The rich 'white' boys were guilty of LivingWBRWB's & SonsORWDaddies.
Is racism wrong, or just the direction? A polluted river still stinks regardless of the direction it is flowing.
I say hang the DA. Sharpton and Jackson are just a couple of Nap.... never mind.

Dood, I couldn't give a flying beer keg or a tiger print thong who's innocent or guilty in this situation. On the "responsible person/dumbass scale" I rate all parties to be "high achieving dumbasses".

Don't forget, one of the boys also has an outstanding conviction in Washington, D.C. for a hate crime. That was prior to this rape accusation. The media were the ones expressing doubts about the accusations from the get go. I hardly think they deserve to be blamed. For this. They certainly deserve blame for much of the BS they present as "news".
And I'm sorry. I have a hard time working up a lot of moral indignation about this. The idiots had strippers performing in their frat. Give me a break. Did they deserve to have their lives "ruined"? No. Are they "innocent"? Hardly.

I remeber that and it just reminded me and reinforced the idea of how petty and bitchy women can be.

This thing became a creation of the media..........kind of like when Scott pETERSON MURDERED HIS WIFE......IT HAPPENS IN THIS COUNTRY....why the media orgy over this particular case?

I was told by a friend that Nifong pursued all incriminations as District Attorney because he felt that anyone who wanted a day in court should have it. Not sure how accurately this describes Nifong's prosecutorila philosophy, but there were a lot of issues that surfaced with this case, and that is why it was so newsworthy.
Some of the issues: town - gown relationship, false - accusations, rich vs poor, university administrators rushing to judgement, Black leaders using others for personal gain, media overkill.....in fact, the state's attny general said it best when he expressed concern that too much Bravado was used by the DA and others. Clearly, many people went too far, and I cited another example with Duke volleyball that represents this contention.

1) The girl was confused/lied/high whatever. 2) DA wanted to get re-elected and took shortcuts and was dumb enough to push the case even after the DNA tests came out negative. 3) Duke was negligent in letting boys be boys. That house has seen its share of police presence before the allegations. 4) The lacrosse guys did nothing to dispel the notion of the dumb guy jock, but whatever they are, they don't deserve to be railroaded for something they didn't do. I am pretty sure they have done enough in their time in Durham to warrant punishment. 5) Nobody talks about the lacrosse coach. Duke told him to take a hike before anything was decided or investigated. He certainly did not live up to his job responsibilities, but he definitely got railroaded. 6) The thing to remember about the press is that they cater to the lowest common denominator. If you are unhappy about their coverage, raise the lowest common denominator and stay away from all the tabloid shows on CNN and Fox..

Be careful "bigfan". The Don Imus School for Tactless, Needless and Stupid Commentary hasn't started it's enrollment process quite yet.

Yes, I agree that the Lacrosse coach was treated unfairly by Duke. Furthermore, I think the President and faculty grossly mismanaged the incident. The honorable thing for President Brodhead would be to resign and allow someone to lead the University whose first priority is students rather than institutional image.
Although I would not have commented on the Rutgers - TN game quite the same way as Imus, I must say that I was struck by the overall gracefullness and beauty of the TN team, particularly Candice Parker, which contrasted sharply with the rather ruffian - looking Rutgers squad.
