The SC team has now had 5 days to sit around and celebrate and smile over there "unbelievable run" through the Conference Championship. If they were a bit more seasoned I would say they might win but too much time off between their run. They will face a team that can match or be better than them serve for serve and Middles that can move better than anything they have seen for awhile. No...... PSU will see Irvine in the finals. Too many veterans and just better team.

USC will have to make sure that they don't give up 12 aces like they did first time around.

NO HD for ESPN U so MVB not as glamourous as WVB or Lacrosse to be on ESPN 2 for the Semi's. But at least the matches are on TV.

30 kills says "I don't think USC is afraid of the PSU middles.. Austin Zahn is quicker and more explosive than both Holt and Lipstic although he is not quite as big." Whereas I am sure they aren't afraid, make no mistakes that this is a GROSS mis-match for USC. Having said that, it is for any opponent.

So just to antagonize, How did Ohio get into the final four? I mean, maybe Junita should get a chance at the NCAA? Or considering Club teams across the nation are beating D3 and NAIA teams, maybe club should get a shot at it too.

Actually, it is pretty simple...all you have to do is create a conference with 6 or more teams playing men's varsity volleyball at the DI/II level. Apply for an AQ and after a waiting period you'll get your spot! Of course, good luck at getting that done quickly!

The Big West could expand by adding 1 team and get an AQ in an instant.
If the MIVA loses 1 team the midwest will not retain an automatic qualifying slot, yet, that could hurt men's volleyball overall. Maybe the MIVA and the EIVA should merge and by so doing improve the Final 4 as a MPSF team would likely get the leftover slot.
As to club, club teams do not usually follow the eligibility rules that varsity programs must follow. Many club teams have grad students or overage players. One club team actually qualified in 1980, but were not varsity so could not go to the Final 4. Club teams used to be part of varsity teams in the distant past.
Club teams now have the NIRSA championship.

I don't think USC is afraid of the PSU middles. Austin Zahn is quicker and more explosive than both Holt and Lipstic although he is not quite as big. USC will have to make sure that they don't give up 12 aces like they did first time around. Lipsitz is 6'7" while Zahn is 6'8" and both Holt and Lipsitz are significantly quicker than Zahn. You might want to try a different angle on your support of USC here. Or at the very least do a little homework so you can (a) get the relative heights right, (b) get the spelling of their names right, and (c) not argue that an honorable mention All-MPSF player is better than two first team All Americans. For USC, it all will come down to how they serve. Cirarelli is a very smart player who will hit a lot of tape serves, so he'll be fine. But Troy will need to back off a little on his serve, which will weaken USC's major advantage that drove their run through the MPSF tournament. I'm suspecting that both Current and Zahn will have trouble serving. Last year, when USC was swept twice over two days at Provo, Troy had 2 aces and 8 service errors, Zahn had 0 aces and 4 service errors (only playing in 3 games total), and Current had 0 aces and 6 service errors. That's not sounding too promising when half of your servers average 1.2 service errors a game each and only account for two aces between them over six games. USC's psyche is perhaps the biggest question mark. Do they have confidence and believe they are the best team from the west or are they starting to buy into all of the "altitude" talk?

regardless of what happens...Coach Ferguson deserves some praise for what he has done with the team this season....he has endured some difficult years but has done what he has could to improve his program....even if they don't win it all, I think USC fans can be happy that he has brought the program back to the Final Four after two decades...
(yes I know the NCAA will sue all of us for using Final Four for volleyball...)

The problem with PSU is that they have to beat 2 MPSF teams to win the NC. They've never done that (probably never will), and certainly won't do it this year. OSU is a non-factor. I want to say UCI, but USC is pretty darn talented.
Tough to call between UCI and USC.
