awesome match tonight! was worth the 3 hours stuck in traffic. go bears! If you lived in Nebraska, you would never run into this With Cal being the no. 2 blocking team in nation (currently) and Stanford no. 38, I was not surprised at this loss. But happy it happened because it will put Nebraska at 2nd place behind Florida.

That depends -- if Cal ends up winning this... do they have to go ahead of Florida? So beachbomb, since you felt Stanford would have been worthy of 1st place with a win, since Cal beat the team you felt worthy of 1st place, that means you're now supporting Cal being 1st place and Stanford being 3rd behind Florida... right? Florida should solidify its first place standing and garner most of the first place votes. Cal probably around #3 and Stanford should be #4 or #5 at the highest.

I said somewhere else that Stanford might not improve on what they showed in LA, and several clowns called me a moron for even suggesting such a thing. On the basis of this game, I would say that they haven't improved at all since that weekend. You said last week that Stanford might not improve at all over the rest of the season. So the next match they don’t play well and you think that proves Stanford won’t improve over the rest of the season. Yes, you are a moron. What if they play well in a match next weekend? You can’t make your conclusion from one match.

Throw in a little bit of rush hour traffic and the wet weather. I suspect Cal might get a few #1 votes, and might even stand a good shot of going ahead of Nebraska in the AVCA Poll. I looked at Nebraska's schedule, and it overall seems comparable to Cal's considering. Cal had the chance to play the entire Pac-10 and has beaten every team except USC, and had two match points on USC.

Congrats to Cal. They played with confidence and a nothing to lose attitude. Lloyd did a great job of leading them as a senior should. This was much like the UCLA match and last years Michigan match. Stanford played tight and never could get into a rhythm. I thought the 7 missed serves in the first set (all missed badly) set the tone for them. They served patty cakes the rest of the match. I knew they were in trouble when they passed a couple of free balls out by the 10 ft line. That comes from tightness. Also, the 3 seniors probably had their worst matches of the year and they all had it on the same night. These 3 are going to have to step up and get this team playing better so they can peak at the end of the season if they are going to have any chance of making a run in the NCAA's. I predicted at the beginning of the year that 2 losses will win the Pac-10. I now think that 3 losses will win the Pac-10. So, Stanford is still in the hunt but they will need to pretty much run the tables in league. I wouldn't be surprised if Cal drops one in Oregon this week and also drops one on the Washington road trip. Stanford and the LA schools will also be coming after them on their home court. They now have a big bulls-eye on their backs. It will be interesting to see how they handle it.

There are several teams in the country that are better than Florida, some of them in the PAC-10 and some not. Keeping Florida at #1 is a damned joke. Their league is horrible and I mean horrible....as bad if not worse than Hawaii's conference so surprise that they beat everyone! They are not the best team in the country and when tournament time comes Mary Wise's team will do what it always does, which is NOT win a championship. Get em out of their gym and on the road, outside of their crappy conference and voila, they will lose. If they were in the PAC-10 they would be no better than 5th place, period..... Florida deserves its number one ranking, period! Saying the SEC is horrible just shows how little you know about volleyball outside of your Big Easy conference out there in Cali. And your cookie cutter insults (Get em out of their gym and on the road, blah, blah, blah) are stupid. Only one team can win the title, and Florida has had much more success in recent years than your 49ers, who can't seem to make it out of the first round of the NCAA's.

This response seems to be more about hating LBSU and this poster than it does about Florida being #1. Based on how rankings work, Florida is as deserved as Cal, Nebraska. As far as them being the #1 team, they arent.

Florida backed into the #1 spot based on three matches: a 5-set win against Nebraska in August, a 4-set loss to Penn State in early Sept., and a 5-set win over Texas also in early Sept.. Penn State and Texas have since shown themselves to be much weaker than they were thought to be. Nebraska has one win over a top 10 team (Illinois). I'd say that no one deserves to be #1 right now.

Florida didn't back into the number one spot, they moved up to the top spot based on their performance relative to the performance of other teams in consideration. Florida beat Nebraska head to head, it doesn't matter if the victory was in August, it doesn't matter that the match went 5 games. What matters is that they beat Nebraska. Do I believe that Florida is the best team in the country? no but that's because unlike season's past, no team has established itself as "the best team in the country." As far as ranking is concerned, Florida has earned its top ranking and they should remain at the top until they lose, like it or not that is how they AVCA poll works. Keystone, I do not hate Beachman. I may disagree with him but I don't hate him or the 49er Volleyball program. My tone may have been a bit much but I don't like the fact that Florida is not getting the respect I feel they deserve, and Beachman has made similar comments about Hawai'i. If you look at my posts about the AVCA poll, I've been consistent of my support for Florida once they took the top spot. Unless they lose, the Gators are the number 1 ranked team in the country, and rightfully so. CAL has looked good thus far and should take over 2 in the polls come Monday.

I have to admit Cal has progressed much more than I had expected this year. I'm especially impressed with Murrey and Brown, and it's very good to see Hawari back in good form.
Many have already brought up Murrey's outbreak season, but I feel the need to emphasize it given her sub par season last year. She's playing with so much confidence and really turning it on in all areas of her game, posing a threat from all areas of the court.
Brown was more of a blocker last year and was a bit slow in getting to the few sets she got, but she's grown so much and just dominating this year, both offensively and defensively. I thought she was key to slowing down Klineman, blocking one (or two??) of Klineman's signature inside hard angle hits, and slowing down a couple others. I was surprised to see her as M1, but she does have an edge over Hawari, who's come back quite strong after her injury.
I was unsure of Hawari since she'd been out for a year, but she's just picking up where she left off before her ACL injury and continuing to improve. I had initially hoped Johnson would return to the middle (I still think she'd do better in the middle), but Brown and Hawari are really holding their own, and Johnson is clearly a stronger opposite compared to Gehan and Loerch, esp with her experience.
Lloyd of course is Lloyd and she's obviously adjusted very well to the new faster offense, a bit to my surprise. Her set selection really took apart the Stanford defense. A number of 1:1 or no block situations where the Cal hitters just unloaded. Also a real treat to see her occasionally playing as a hitter this year. She's got one heck of an arm/wrist snap.
Gehan is steadily improving and I'm hoping she'll pick it up a bit, but she showed great signs in this match after getting over the 1st game nerves. I thought she had some mental errors early, but really started playing doing well as the game progressed. Hopefully, she'll really turn it on by tournament time.
And the back row defense really impressed me last night. Lots of pancakes, and they adjusted well to Klineman's attacks, picking up her offspeed and hard driven shots.
Go Bears!!!!
Side question, anyone know if video of this match has been uploaded somewhere?
