Couple of notes from the match: Cal played great, but this was totally the Carli Lloyd show... she ran the quick offense to perfection often getting 1-1 matchups to both outsides, even a couple of open nets... (Come on, who leaves Murrey an open net to hit on). She was huge on the block, stuffing Williams several times. Her quick sets to the outside were too fast for Browne and Wopat to get to, leaving huge holes in the block. Stanford was just outplayed for the most part... Lichtman and Browne couldn't connect. Her set location was off... There were two sets in game 4 that fell in between Spelman and Klineman, neither thinking the set was theirs. While Stanford's loose ball play was great (lots of great hustle plays). They had problems digging the hard balls.. even Gabi shanked some balls that she normally would have dug up easy. Klineman definitely seemed to lose heat at then end of the match. I thought Lichtman needed to involve the other hitters more especially Spelman... Although Spelman started a bit slow, she was hitting much better at the end (too late) but she can't get kills if she isn't getting sets. Same for Wopat... when Wopat and Klineman were the only two hitters in the front, Wopat was all but ignored (by both Lichtman and the Cal block). jgrout, ok I agree with you now that Stanford needs Cook back... Stanford's worst rotations were 5 and 6, both with Lichtman in the front row. In previoius matches you could rely on Klineman to get you out, but Cal's defense was good enough to run lots of points on them in those rotations. Having Lichtman hitting would keep the opposing block honest. Also, in the rotation with Klineman front right, Spelman front left... why oh why do they keep trying to stack Klineman on the left... It's a huge traffic jam there with Spelman and Klineman both confused with passes and sets. I know Spelman isn't supposed to be passing but she's a target there for opposing servers and can't get out of the way of the server. Then on transition Spelman needs to run all the way across to block the right side... which she was too slow to do a couple of times. If Klineman stayed on the right, she'd have a clear hitting lane and could stay and block if the transition set was coming fast. Cal #1? In my opinion yes... granted I've only seen Florida and Nebraska on television and haven't seen Hawaii... but they played practically flawless tonight. Definitely better than what I saw in the Florida/Tennessee match.

Definitely better than what I saw in the Florida/Tennessee match. I was at the match and the above review pretty much is right on. Cal served very tough .Cassidy did all she could to run balls down and make sets.At one point in the match Cassidy was tying her shoes to catch a breather. I thought the Stanford hitters did OK with what they got. How can you knock Williams when she hit in the 400's. Stanford will be back if and when they get healthy.Cassidy is the glue holding the team together and she will get them back on track. Stanford supporters need to relax and let it play out. Should still be a great year.

Looks like someone should post a tutorial on how to use the quotes function... First time with the quote thing.Sorry .Thanks for the support. Honestly, I usually don't bother reading posts where they've embedded their post inside of the quotes. It's too hard to figure out which is the original and which is the new comment. When you quote a post, look for the [/quote] at the end and type everything after that.

Cal #1? IMHO--NO!
Florida #1 Nebraska #2 Cal #3
At this point who's #1 doesn't matter anyway so there's no reason to get worked up about it one way or the other. There's still a LOT of season left for everyone in every conference to sort themselves out.
Tomorrows AVCA coaches poll should make for some heated and entertaining discussion ;D

Although a Cal supporter, at this point in the season the weaker Cal preseason schedule should keep them behind Florida and Nebraska. If Nebraska beats Texas and Iowa State while Cal/Stanford play the Oregon schools this week Nebraska should go back ahead anyway.

At this point who's #1 doesn't matter anyway so there's no reason to get worked up about it one way or the other. You could take that one step further and say any opinion on this volleyball forum about any subject doesn’t really matter. But I am going to keep posting anyway. To frustrated Stanford fans: sometimes it is better to wait a day to post comments after a difficult loss. Put things in perspective. For example, Klineman can’t dominate every rally. Still she had the most kills of anyone on the court for I believe the twelfth consecutive match. I can go along with Carli Lloyd for Pac-10 POW.

I was at the match and I agree, Klineman was her good old self doing everything you could ask for. Klineman posted those numbers despite Cal focusing on her. She just didn't have the offensive support she needed. And Lloyd really took apart the Stanford block.

I stand by everything I posted on this thread, all relatively early posts since I had to return home after watching live the game. In this game, California played about as good a competitive game as could be played; Stanford played well, but not good enough to win. Who knows what if Cassidy had been her usual self; who cares? Another match between them coming up and it should be a great match-up.
In the AVCA, no way that--with their system--Cal makes it to the top. It's like the old Congressional seniority system, the unions' seniority system. Florida, which was #1, did not lose this week-end. Ergo, Florida remains #1. FWIW, my first place vote went to Cal, with Nebraska second.

same thing happened in 2008 and then we swept CAL in their House...
and it doesn't matter how good you play in the middle of the season it's how good you play at the end of the season.

Not entirely true cuz' a lot of the early and mid-season games end up determining seedings for the post season which CAN have an impact on a teams post season welfare.

Stanford had 7 losses going into the post season and got a #4 seed last year.. They only have 2 losses half-way through. I'm pretty optimistic.
