What makes this interesting is the huge recruiting battle that took place to secure Paula. She was on all the top program's list - eventhough I was never convinced that she was a "sure-thing". She is physical. Can she play high enough above the net to help take Texas to title-town? I never saw her pass a ball for Penn State, so I'm not sure about her serve-receive game. But again, what makes this something unique is that top 5 recruits seldom transfer - especially to teams that might be in your way of a National Championship.

But at the end of the day you have two teams loaded with talent who are in each others way to winning a title whether or not Prieto stayed or went to Texas.

Still Dorothy, don't you agree that Prieto helps Texas' chances? Can you imagine the way Prieto will play if they see Penn State in the semi-finals?

They certainly don't lack for size, and talented net players. IMO she doesn't address any of Texas challenges as a program which is lack of 6 rotation players, again IMO. I can't imagine how she will play against PSU in a FF, nobody can. In most cases if players get caught up in emotion in big matches, it works against them.

Prieto was injured most of the time at PSU and when she came in was inconsistent. She is an outstanding player, but also has the ability to make a lot of errors. Errors in Rose's system simply do not work. That alone maybe why she didn't play as much as she wanted to. But if she is leaving for playing time, Texas was not the right choice IMHO - Miami would have been great - she would have been the top player in the conference - or close to it. But that is neither here nor there - she will be at Texas and fighting for a spot like everyone else.
The most interesting thing is the other OH commits Texas has received in the next two years - how do they feel now? Another Stud is in their way --- makes one think... kinda like with the UCLA setter that transferred to Pepperdine - pushed others out. Recruits commit so early and things change!
I wish her all the best as she was one of the most exciting junior players to watch! I hope it works out for her.

Someone has to replace Bailey Webster (who was only a front row player) at OH. While most have penciled in Tiffany Baker as a starting OH for 2014, we have yet to see her in a (non-Spring) match as she spent all of 2013 and much of 2014 rehabbing. At Opposite, there are a lot of options if Chiaka is moved to the middle; so, a starting sport could be up for grabs. I think Paulina walks in and immediately competes for a starting pin-hitter spot. With the 6-2 offense most likely being what we'll see to open the season, that increases Prieto's chances of seeing immediate floor time. After Eckerman, we just don't have returning pin-hitters with the size and skills Elliott prefers. If 5'11 Pilar Victoria and 5'9 Amy Neal found opportunities to hit in last season's 6-2 offense, Paulina and Tiffany should have no issues in 2014 (assuming no health concerns). Granted, Pilar and Neal played all 6-rotations during that time. From a pure power and strength perspective, Paulina packs more punch than Baker, Dalton, Pilar, and Neal. I expect her to win a starting spot.

Paulina Prieto Cerame has decided to leave the Penn State Nittany Lions to play for the Texas Longhorns. Here's the article: www.centredaily.com/2014/08/04/4291512/penn-state-volleyball-prieto-cerame.html?sp=/99/146/“(Paulina) wasn’t happy and I wish her well,” Rose said in an email. It isn't the first time an athlete has left a well-respected sports program to play for another. The only logical reason why I can think Paulina would transfer is to get more playing time. She was one of the top recruits a few years ago and I always wondered why Russ didn't give her more playing time. I hope she is happy in Texas. Any other reasons you can think of that could explain why Paulina left the Nittany Lions? How about good Mexican Food ... i'm hungry...

They'll start in a 6-2 with Bell and McCage on the right, Hattis and Ogbogu in the middle, and Eckerman and Paulina on the left. They'll realize they don't have the ball control for it and scrap it by conference play. They'll then switch to a 5-1 with Dalton setting, McCage on the right, Bell and Ogbogu in the middle and Eckerman and Paulina both 6-rotation outsides. Eckerman looked technically better at serve recieve in the spring game and I'm hoping Paulina can be serviceable as both will have 1-2 rotations with 2 other defensive specialists back there with them (probably McCoy at libero and Brooks as DS for McCage)

Can you tell me where you got this information? I'm not trying to be sassy, I'm genuinely curious because the article I linked is the only information I've gotten on the subject. It's nice to know she didn't leave PSU and go to Texas out of spite or bitterness, but because she genuinely didn't think PSU was the right place for her. I know this because she left PSU, went through the process of finding another school and ultimately chose Texas. Her coach was quoted as saying "she wasn't happy" I guess I am operating from the facts as we know them. I already know that her coach was quoted as saying "she wasn't happy." I quoted him in the very beginning of this post. Restating what you already said earlier in this post as factual proof doesn't make what you said more true. Without any articles, interviews, or direct words from Paulina, you're just going off your own assumptions.

I understand completely why Rose granted the release. He's baiting them into terrible line-ups that his team's servers will destroy.

Players transfer everyday, not sure why when this happens there has to be something nefarious involved. No one's saying something nefarious was involved. People are just curious as to why you would leave a school with an amazing volleyball program, just to go to a similar one.

I stated the facts "as we know them" Those facts would be her coach saying she wasn't happy, and that after visiting a few schools she chose Texas. Anyone saying anything other than that would be making assumptions, I made none.

Because you weren't happy at the amazing program for whatever reason and wanted to try your chances at another one? I guess I don't get why this is a shocking development. This happens at most programs other than Stanford.
