Badgers take the first set 25-16. Our block needs some work.

Wisconsin looks really good. Louisville, not so much.

2nd set a lot tighter. WI won 25-22. I hope at least the locker rooms are air conditioned.

Bates with a kill and an ace. And then serve, Louisville overpass, Chapman kill. Yeah!

Offense and serving looked great! Blocking and defence not so much. Hope it's early season rust. Anyway...so glad the season has begun!

Just got home. Man, it was muggy in there. I think I saw the first "sweat" replay I've ever seen at the beginning of the 3rd set when 3 Louisville girls hit the floor to pick up a tip, got it up and free balled it over. The refs blew it dead and called a replay so they could clean the floor where they hit the ground.
Overall, a workmanlike effort for UW. Blocking was not good, but pretty much everything else was. Offense looked crisp and balanced, serving was tough and digging was pretty solid. The passing was really good for the most part. 0 RE and numerous options for Carlini to go to. When you give her 2 and 3 point passes, it's pretty much over.
Thomas, Chapman and both middles played really well - which was good to see. Only Morales seemed to struggle on offense and in set 3 was replaced by Bates, who played all the way around. Morales then subbed in for Chapman in the backrow. Bates looks like she could be a really good player. Solid passing, and a whip of an arm. Her first collegiate kill nearly took the head off of the right back player on UL's side.
Would be nice to see more dominant net play defensively, but overall it was a solid first match of 2014.

agreed, some good passing, good setting, serving.... blocking though was sooo bad. Thompson looked so slow on the block.
The badgers end the match with 3 blocks. for the whole match. That's not going to cut it.

I don't have much time, but I agree with what was said here. The blocking has to improve, but the passing held up pretty well with the new passers, Carlini had her usual share of ridiculous plays, and the offense was pretty balanced, with the only struggle at the L2 position. The offense did seem quicker, and Carlini and Chapman seemed to connect well with that. At any rate, you take a sweep to open the year. They just have to work on the block and avoid the big runs like the one that made the second set nip and tuck.

I think the towel that the Louisville setter had tucked into the back of her spandex came loose and was lying on the floor after they all picked themselves up after playing the tip--I guess the ref felt it was a hazard and called a replay.
