The bigger story is how these "old school" schools--i.e. LBSU, San Diego, Hawaii, and others--have continued to recruit good players and are able to challenge the domination of the BCS member institutions in women's volleyball. Universities, such as Long Beach State, continues to attract top 25 talent by offering student athletes top quality education, excellent coaching and tradition, a great location, and excellent facilities and fan support. Despite the financial, and political, domination of the BCS member schools, Long Beach State University was able to put together the 10th best women's volleyball recruiting class in 2014.

Beach takes down Irvine
25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 25-21
got dicey 3rd set and fortunate to survive that set, Beach still does not look comfortable passing down the stretch. At least dominated the 4th set. Really need Miley back - lots of good pieces and depth to this team, and Hudson is doing a good job, they have to get more comfortable in the back-row.

Beach vs. Hawaii:
two top defensive teams in the Big West
both hitting about with a % of 0.250 & both defending about 0.16.
Haw/LB #1 & #2 in blocking, LB is #3 in the conference in digs
so should be a gritty match - Hawaii tall, athletic, and imposing up front, and LB with being athletic up front - both with two aggressive setters who dump a fair amount
Both without their star player at 100% for the first weeks of the season.
? for LB is will Miley be back and playing, with LB's two OHs Reid & Bukovec going off against North no less last week
? for Haw is will they handle the LB's serve and get good sets to Magill who wasn't a factor against North, plus get Taylor back to form, and how will Hawaii handle MacKie/Okpala on the slide

Prediction: LBSU in 3 sets.

Expecting an LBSU sweep tonight! doubtful, Hawaii is just too talented to be swept 2 nights in a row - this is likely to 4-5 hard sets, both teams are going to extremely focused

Hawaii will be on a mission tonight after last night's debacle at CSUN. However, BG has his ladies prepared for tonight's match and I will have to give the edge to the Beach in 4 sets. I watched last night's Hawaii/CSUN match on prime ticket last night. The cameras were continuously focused on UH coach Shoji throughout the broadcast; and, Shoji could be seen, not heard, taking out his frustration on a few of his players. On paper, both Hawaii and Long Beach State are evenly matched. However, with 4 seniors, I would give the maturity, and the mental aspect of the game, to the Beach.

If the Beach serves tough and gets Hawaii's passers a little razzled, they will sweep. As someone mentioned, the mental game for Hawaii is important. If they(Hawaii) start to shank, I can see it taking it's toll mentally and it'll be a repeat of CSUN and the Beach, being so quick on offense and so athletic with Okpala, will easily handle Hawaii. At least with Okpala, even if the pass is a bit off, you can set her behind the setter for the slide, she's that athletic, but that's not the case for Magill and she's become predictable in that she'll tip 50% of her shots due to bad sets.

I am excited that the Hawaii-LBSU match is going to be an important one for both teams. I think rekindling that rivalry is good for the sport.

I am excited that the Hawaii-LBSU match is going to be an important one for both teams. I think rekindling that rivalry is good for the sport. And I hope, along with another one or two teams, they can build the rivalry in which these match-ups will be of top 15 opponents annually. Obviously not this year...but I can still hope.

I expect Hawaii to come out strong and not let up all night. Taking my Beach glasses off I see the Rainbows winning in 4. LBSU is not a mentally tough team and I just do not see them playing well in long enough stretches to win the match. Hope I am wrong but LBSU has shown me nothing this season in important matches, outside of CSUN.

Nice win for the beach. and the best part is, the Beach have yet to play at 100% strength for a match this year, if Miley can get acclimated quick once she gets back, the Beach front-line block/attack could get even better.
