No matter how I say this, its going to make me sound a little perverted but......Here is the fascination with John Cook in my opinion. He is tall, dark, handsome, and very successful. He is also a bit of a mystery. I know the female fans like him alot, but he is also a character that many dislike because subconsciously people don't think that anyone deserves to have that much going for them. Rose has been more successful but people do not obsess about him the way they do Cook. John also has that devil may care persona that makes him even more appealing to love/hate. He also tells the truth at times whether it is politically incorrect or not. Or maybe, any latent tendencies notwithstanding, people realize he behaves like a whiny douche bag.

It doesn't sound remotely perverted and it's nice to see when a man is confident enough about himself to positively comment on the looks of another man. I didn't realize he is commonly thought of as particularly handsome amongst the female fan base. Huh! Maybe he's just not my type but is the type of many other females. As far as Rose not being obsessed about, I think he takes a lot of criticism. I'm not sure why, other than it's such a pain to have him and his team beat our teams year after year, but he does take a great deal of heat from a lot of people. Let me put it this way: I think I would enjoy going out to dinner with Russ Rose. I have my doubts about the same with John Cook. But certainly I could be wrong, I don't actually know either of them. I agree. Its slightly uncomfortable to be in the presence of John where Russ seems like a hoot to be around. Cook is a very decent guy but he is very competitive and in the moment his passion sometimes outweighs his manners. I completely understand this. I have met tons of great people that when it comes to game time, are not pleasant to be around.

I think John is somewhat introverted. He isn't necessarily a charmer, not that I've experienced anyway. But he is thoughtful. He understands people, even if he doesn't use that understanding to his advantage all the time. He is hard on his players, but he also seems to care deeply for them. He is cognizant of when he may be sounding too negative and takes pains to point out the positive as well.
HolidayHusker put it very well, I think. John Cook can be uncomfortable to be around. He has resting bitch face. He broods. He doesn't really do small talk well, but bring up something that interests him and he's passionate about, and hang on because that's all you'll talk about for awhile.
It takes time (in my case, a lot of time) for someone to warm up a bit to John, but I get the sense he's one of those people that if you ever do become friends, you'll be friends for life.

I'm not an insider, but I do work with the mother of a former Husker player. She assured me that her daughter, and the other members of the team, love playing for JC. I'm sure that this is not universal, but pretty consistent with the players that stay. John is extremely competitive, and the players will either thrive within that atmosphere or leave. JC's dry humor is not always appreciated (I think that it's often misunderstood), and he has admitted that he sometimes plays the jerk to get the team and/or the crowd involved, so I understand that not everybody will be a fan. But I don't think that he cares, as long as his team is winning.

Is it perhaps possible that as opposed to NE playing "out of their minds", they simply played closer to their true potential? Time will tell. Yes. Possible. But, realistically, PSU has more talent than Nebraska does. I think it takes away from what they just did, a little, to not appreciate the level of defense they played. Can they do that all the time? Oh I have no doubt PSU has more talent. Can they domit all the time? Obviously not Hopefully by tournament time they'll be more consistent.

As a long time Husker fan I have watched Coach Cook's sideline demeanor change a lot in the time he's been at Nebraska. It just doesn't seem like he enjoys what he does anymore during matches. He always seems pretty upbeat and easy going in press conferences before/after matches but I don't see that guy any more on the sidelines. I can't imagine the pressure in that job or the pressure he has placed upon himself in the process but it's very noticeable.
