Very shocked to read this. Wish him a speedy recovery. Some may wonder how a guy like Anderson who seemingly has everything be depressed? He is young, rich, very good looking and blessed with talent to play volleyball at the highest level. Depression do not practise discrimination and attack all kind of people. I may never understand why he is depressed but I just accept he is depressed and wish him the best and hope to see him on the court soon He's rich? I didn't think volleyball players made much money. I see references to "six figure" salaries, but that can be a pretty wide spectrum, $100K or $900K?. Russian taxes probably don't help much with the depression.

Maybe he has an endorsement deal, but what financial burdens does he have? Student Loans- probably not. Car payment- maybe, Mortgage- don't think so. Even after taxes I'm sure he still has disposable income for a few nights out and leisure travel. Time however is something he doesn't have a lot of, and when it's need to visit loved ones no amount of money can replace time with your family.

Top male VB players can make low seven figures. It's a handful. Matt is good enough to get that kind of money.

He's been playing professional volleyball at a very elite level for 5 years with literally zero expenses or taxes, not including endorsement deals he's received overseas. He's got plenty of money in the bank and can easily afford an extended vacation. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back with USA volleyball next summer, then professionally in a less depressing area of the world.

If you follow Matt on Twitter, you'll see that he has a few nice luxury cars that he likes to mod quite a bit, which takes some money in addition to the initial expense of the car. You don't buy multiple luxury cars and mod them out making in the low 100Ks.

League, then national team, then World League, then Championships, then back to Pro League. That's a lot of volleyball and life on the road. Hope his batteries get recharged and love of vball is fired back up, but got to understand if it doesn't. He's done a lot for USA already.

American players with overseas contracts have to report all income, including use of apartments and cars, and pay taxes on their salaries to the IRS. Some even have to pay taxes in the country they are playing in, although some contracts separate that cost out. It's probably safe to say that the top American players aren't struggling financially, but just like most people, it takes time and good planning to be financially secure.

If it doesn't work out he should really go for a modeling career.
Traveling to all these places maybe he is just struggling to make friends in these foreign countries.

Confused as to why his appearance keeps getting brought up...... I was the Pyramid a few years back for a world league match (or was it an exhibition? can't remember) - I think it was against Argentina - and towards the end there was an announcement that Matt Anderson would be signing autographs twenty minutes after the match ended. There was immediately a very long line of smitten teenage girls (including my 13 year old niece) and their equally smitten moms waiting for him to arrive. That's why his appearance keeps getting brought up, I think.

By reading the comments it's almost as if we might feel less sorry for him if he was less attractive? Or at least be able to better understand his situation?

By reading the comments it's almost as if we might feel less sorry for him if he was uglier? Do you really doubt that?
