Coming home to the US will be good for him. His boyfriend will be very happy now and they can spend more time together. Being apart with a love one is always hard Is Matt Anderson gay? Not that it matters, but I swear, if there was a "gay" sport, it would be volleyball. Half the guys I've ever played with are gay men...not that I'm complaining I've always felt the one thing missing from women's volleyball is some NAGVA-style trash talking.

I'm not surprised he wants to come home, guy is lonely, and if he IS gay, he's certainly wasting his gay golden years living in Russia.
For someone born and raised in Upstate New York, he sounds kind of Eastern European in this video.

Anytime you spend all your time around people speaking broken, accented English it's tough to stop yourself from talking a little bit like them. Also I'm not sure where all these gay rumours come from...He could be gay, sure, but if he is so far as I know he hasn't come out or anything, so maybe we should all lay that to rest.

maybe we don't "for sure" if he's gay because he is a private person, and I think that we should respect his privacy. It doesn't matter if he's straight, gay, blue, green, etc. What matters is that he's made a choice that he believe is right for him. I hope to see him play again for USA.

This thread is even more gossipy than usual for volleytalk, and it's not even in the right forum.

He has such a plain name. Second only to "John Smith" for most boring.

I don't care about his sexual orientation, but let's not forget where he is and that country's view on the LGBT population.
I don't know if he is gay or not and like others have mentioned, it doesn't matter. I just wanted to bring up the country's view because I could see how it could affect someone.
Watching that youtube video of him makes me think it's more just about him missing his family and friends.
I wish him the best.

Missing family/friends is not equal to depression.
We casually toss around words like "depressed" (e.g., "I'm so depressed that Breaking Bad is over.") and "genius" (e.g., "Bill Walsh was an X's and O's genius.") and "amazing" like they grow on trees.
Ugh.

Matt needs to throw his teflon frying pan(s) away, they give off neurotoxic gas when being used. Symptoms are worse than depression.

Very shocked to read this. Wish him a speedy recovery. Some may wonder how a guy like Anderson who seemingly has everything be depressed? He is young, rich, very good looking and blessed with talent to play volleyball at the highest level. Depression do not practise discrimination and attack all kind of people. I may never understand why he is depressed but I just accept he is depressed and wish him the best and hope to see him on the court soon He's living in freakin Russia; everyone's depressed; he'll heal up back in the States after a break from VB. Agreed! Siberia doesn't seem like a fun place to be. He'll get better!!! Then maybe will play in Italy for less money but in a nicer/friendlier place. If only we would have a pro league here in the US for men and women. Sigh......
