By reading the comments it's almost as if we might feel less sorry for him if he was uglier? Do you really doubt that? It's kind of unfortunate.

Yes, so much like an autoimmune disorder or allergies occur when one's immune system attacks a healthy part of the body or an otherwise innocuous foreign visitor (like a food) for no good reason, depression occurs when one's brain chemistry creates this sadness/grieving response absent the outside stimuli that would normally be the trigger. Yes, this is a good analogy. Nothing a little effexor can't fix.

I was the Pyramid a few years back for a world league match (or was it an exhibition? can't remember) - I think it was against Argentina - and towards the end there was an announcement that Matt Anderson would be signing autographs twenty minutes after the match ended. There was immediately a very long line of smitten teenage girls (including my 13 year old niece) and their equally smitten moms waiting for him to arrive. That's why his appearance keeps getting brought up, I think. Still struggling to find the connection between his looks and his decision to take a break from volleyball. By reading the comments it's almost as if we might feel less sorry for him if he was less attractive? Or at least be able to better understand his situation? Really? You are surprised by this? Looks permeates our entire society. Hands down..... Good Looking depressed is much better than ugly depressed. ; )

Just like it would get brought up if this story was about the stunning Francesca Piccinini. instagram.com/francescapiccinini12

Top male VB players can make low seven figures. It's a handful. Matt is good enough to get that kind of money. Curious, is there a reliable reference for this information? It's easy to look up NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL salaries, but all I ever see for volleyball players are vague suggestions that they make "high 6 figure" or "low 7 figure" salaries. Key word is reliable. It would be good information to know; for example an athletic 6'10" male may be deciding between a journeyman career in the NBA or a star career in the volleyball pro leagues and some idea of potential income would be very helpful.

He's rich? I didn't think volleyball players made much money. I see references to "six figure" salaries, but that can be a pretty wide spectrum, $100K or $900K?. Russian taxes probably don't help much with the depression. He's been playing professional volleyball at a very elite level for 5 years with literally zero expenses or taxes, not including endorsement deals he's received overseas. He's got plenty of money in the bank and can easily afford an extended vacation. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back with USA volleyball next summer, then professionally in a less depressing area of the world. Zero expenses perhaps, but definitely not zero taxes. The only way he doesn't pay IRS rates is to pay Russian taxes and document that for the IRS. I can tell you Russian tax rates are quite high (Putin's been buying a lot of tanks lately).

Do you really doubt that? It's kind of unfortunate. Yes, but it's also very repeatably proven to be human nature.

Looking at NBA salaries, a guy like Joel Anthony - the epitome of a journeyman big - is making about $4 million guaranteed this season to sit on the bench. And he flies to games in a customized team jet while never having to make stops in Moscow, Kazan or Novosibirsk. Even at it's highest levels, volleyball can't compete with that.

You had me at "customized jet". They all fly in tricked-out 737/757/767/A319s with seats that fold out into 7'+ beds, lounge chairs, couches, big screens, video games etc. A long, long way from the days of flying commercial with multiple layovers.

Coming home to the US will be good for him. His boyfriend will be very happy now and they can spend more time together. Being apart with a love one is always hard Is Matt Anderson gay? Not that it matters, but I swear, if there was a "gay" sport, it would be volleyball. Half the guys I've ever played with are gay men...not that I'm complaining For two huge reasons, I am shocked and embarrassed I did not know this either (if true, not that it matters). We're all pulling for you, Matt...hope you rest up, feel better and rediscover that passion.

It all depends on who you are and who you know. The Russian government grants some people, including a group referred to as Masters of Sport, exemptions from income tax for life. Some Clubs will pay the income taxes as part of a contract (although an American athlete would have to report this to the IRS as well).
