Very happy for Micha. I still have her first game against USC on my DVR. I wish I could figure out a way to post her first run of aces.
Thanks to AVCA for selecting her.

This is a great choice. I very much admired her performance two years ago when she rolled her ankle. That's a boatload of character there.
Regarding the professional game in general, and the National Team in particular, I can liken that transition to the same one taken by many college Heisman trophy winners. If you look back twenty years, even thirty, you see the "all around athlete" that excelled in college is often too much a generalist for the pro game (Tim Tebow anybody?), or in this analogy, the All Pro Team. The All Pro game in both football and volleyball is often about one to two superlative skillsl, not several very good skills. It's hard to imagine Hancock not being a blocking liability when facing some of the bombers on other National teams. It wouldn't surpass me if in another ten years Glass is considered a little short as respects the blocking duties of a setter for an elite National Team.
Regarding the viability of her serve at the National Team level, as mentioned above, Karch's opinion is that the cost/benefit ration of the hard topspin serve is too high. National Team players have no problem with 3 option passes off of serves that get shanked all over by college receivers, or even a lot of non National Team Pro players.

Congrats to Micha!
Yes, I can see her on the National team. Look how much she's improved her game while at Penn state. Just the little time she's trained with Salima has made a difference. She's committed to getting better all the time and I can see her becoming a top national player if she trained with the US team.
Sh'e could play the same roll as Thompson does on the team. She's quick, has great placement and makes good decisions. Maybe she could even set Foluke properly in front of her (everyone sets her too low!!)
And, BTW, she 4" taller than Thompson and 1" shorter than Glass (not that it matters).

Just wondering if Micha Hancock's AVCA NPOY Award Trophy is bigger than Lauren Carlini's Big 10 Player of the Year and Setter of the Year Award Trophies.

Just wondering if Micha Hancock's AVCA NPOY Award Trophy is bigger than Lauren Carlini's Big 10 Player of the Year and Setter of the Year Award Trophies. This brings up a sore subject for us PSU fans. Apparently there are tensions in the PSU locker room just before the final match. Washington's BT FOY trophy is nicer than Frantti's NFOY award. Washington refuses to switch with Ali and the rest of the team is taking sides. On a serious note...Carlini deserved the BT awards. Micha deserved the NPOY. They are both that good. You could mix and match who got what and I would not be surprised or upset.

The conference awards are supposed to be restricted to the conference season, right? It makes perfect sense that someone could win the national award, but not the conference award. And this was a perfect example of where it would make sense.

Not like that rumor that John Cook took Micha Hancock's blue backpack at the awards banquet. That's not true. He took Jennifer Hamson's purse.

But the most important question remains whether Micha's uniform was in that purse. If so, I wonder how PSU would do tonight with Micha only as the backup libero -- in unconventional volleyball wear...

She commited to Tulsa as her sister was in her final year. The setter situation at PSU didn't work out with the heir apparent leaving the program (never to resurface in WVB again for some reason). Russ went after Micha and she opted to leave Tulsa, a coaching changed was part of the reason, I believe. She was a hitter on her HS team, not the setter. Are you insinuating Rose went after her before Ed Allen resigned as coach of Tulsa?
I believe she had already signed her LOI before Allen resigned. I wasn't insinuating anything, only reporting the sequence of events. Tulsa released her.

USC rallied from 0-2 to beat Minnesota but was up 2 sets to 1 over Penn State and actually led something like 16-8 in the 4th set before Penn St pushed it to five sets and one. That was a fun opening weekend. Kirby Burnham, if i remember correctly, had a nice game.
