With the Big XII getting shut out of the football playoffs, and not having a conference championship being one of the reasons, there is talk of expansion to 12 teams. Many names have been thrown around, UCF, Cincinnati, Memphis to the east.
UCF is probably the only of those that could enhance football, as the school is growing (size and reputation) each year. Might even be able to complete relatively quickly in VB.
But the fun addition would be BYU and Colorado State. Closer geograhically, both good football schools and wow, how would Texas just love some competition in volleyball year in and year out.
I understand the Big XII has the option of petitioning the NCAA for a playoff with 12 teams, but would rather expand.
Any rumors, thoughts on this.
BYU and Colorado State would certainly raise the RPI for volleyball.

RPI is not really a problem though, Big 12 schools rpi is always over inflated.

Schools that would actually benefit the conference in football (which the decision will be based on) AND volleyball.

BYU is discovering being an independent in football is not as great as they thought. Would not surprise me if they join a conference. Not sure how long their deal with ESPN is.

Yeah, I started that rumor / option in another thread. That and $5 will get me a latte at Starbucks!
It would be the perfect match of schools, and probably they could do some creative scheduling to accommodate BYU to eliminate Sunday competitions for sports. Would also bring another Network into the conference with BYU, and increase the viewing base with Colorado, and nationally with BYU.

I understand why conferences want to avoid it. ON the other hand, BYU is generally a good get as a conference member. I don't know much about the Mormon community. How large is it in the U.S. and do Mormons all over the world follow BYU? I know there are a lot of Mormons in Utah (obviously) CA and Arizona, but any other strongholds? I live in central Illinois and my dentist is Mormon,b but there's no big population here. I say none of this to suggest ONLY Mormons follow BYU. Just that the Mormon population is a built in audience and just wondering about the extent of that population.

Good population in Texas as well. Ask azvb, but my friends that are Mormon all are obsessed with BYU sports, and all want their kids to go there. It would create a national audience for a conference similar to Notre Dame, on a smaller scale, but still sizeable enough to make networks notice.

The problem for BYU is their position on not playing on Sundays. A major issue for baseball, softball & basketball.
Colorado State will never happen because they are not a large tv market.
If the Big 12 cannot poach 2 big names from the ACC, I think it would be UCF and Cincinnati. Big 12 would look ‘East not West’ if league decides to expand

Lots of BYU alumni all over the country, however. It's the type of school you follow after you graduate, unlike a commuter school like ASU. My nephew went to a BYU football game in Florida. He was shocked at the number of BYU fans. And what vbprisoner said about the South Pacific.

You left out another state that has a surprisingly strong Mormon population.......Nevada.
When BYU played UT at Jerry World a couple years ago it was probably 50/50 for attendance and I don't think there was a big traveling fan base from Utah.

^^^ But, I'm guessing conferences base the "market" on the actual size of the TV market and the school being considered. Colorado IS a significant media market, but does enough of that market care about Colorado State to make expansion into that market worthwhile compared to other markets. I'd assume many more Coloradans follow Colorado as the flagship state university than CSU, but I'm just assuming.

They actually talked about it on espn a day or two ago, may have been Mike and Mike can't remember. I thought of your thread at the time. Funny, wonder if Texas really wants more vb competition. You would hope so.
