Not much luck there. You either take away tendencies with the block and dig the rest or you don't. More like she outplayed the United States defensive scheme. Always give credit where it is due, they were the better team that match and deserved it. I'm re-watching this now and Brasil served and overall played so much better starting in set two, getting good block touches at the net and digging everything. Beautiful defense and transition offense. My favorite play of the match Davis is playing left back releases early and moves in on sheila thinking she is going to tip short... and she does beach style shot over her in into the back left corner. Priceless. Never ever move for the off speed early, hold and explode, hold and explode. Jacque has consistently performed poorly against the US, but she did have a good game against us in the GM match. I'd call that type of success lucky since it was an anomaly. Consistently swinging high hands and tooling the block, hitting seams, cut shots...that is luck? That's just smart hitting. She saw the block very well that day it seems, even if she usually played poor against the USA that particular day it wasn't luck, but taking advantage of mistakes made by USA blocking and not getting them out of system and capitlizing on it enough in sets 2 3 and 4.

It was an anomalous performance. In your words, she was "taking advantage of mistakes made by USA blocking and not getting them out of system," so who's to say that hadn't been her game plan every time she's stepped foot onto the court against the US? Her past efforts had failed up until those last three sets. She got lucky, because the US uncharacteristically took itself out in that match with an undisciplined block and subpar passing.

So much to say here.
#1: don't get me started on that 24-19 craziness. That's one for the ages! Something similar happened at last year's WCH... We would be 7, 8, 9 points ahead and then the other team tied the set and/or turned it around.
#2: the thing about the GM match is that they started the match really nervous, giving 11 free points, which is insane. What changed from set 2 on was the fact that BRA stopped hitting every ball out of bounds and when the americans saw things would not be as easy as set 1 was, it was already too late. Also, you can see ZR asking the players to serve in the gap between Davis and Larson/Hodge.
It also helped that Fabiana and Fabi played their best match since 2008, and Jaque played her best since, well, ever.
By the way, she has improved a lot, in my opinion and is playing exceptionally well for Minas. They might even make it to the final, if she (and the team) can keep their amazing form.
#3: yes, there will be a lot of pressure to replicate what CUB did and win a third gold medal in a row. I think that not winning the WCH is going to help, because they won't have to deal with the 'invincible' label, the Brazilian media loves so much.
#4: yes, it will be very loud!
#5: I loved it when Hooker played here and wish her all the best, but not against us, if she comes to the olympics.
