PSU appears to be the team to beat again, returning Most Outstanding Player, Megan Courtney, and Freshman of the Year, Ali Frantti, along with vets, Whitney and Washington. Nebraska has a lot of hope for next year. With newcomer Foecke, and a dynamic setter, Hunter, Nebraska's offense will be more balanced. Illinois returns Birks, and adds elite setter, Poulter. Throw in newcomers Prince on the outside and Bastianelli in the middle, the Illini will be GOOD. Wisconsin boasts B1G Setter of the Year, Lauren Carlini, and B1G Defensive of the Year, Morey. Expect freshmen Duello and Williams to turn heads. Courtney was the most outstanding player at the FF. I think that is different than returnng the most outstanding player. Not sure veteran really applies to sophomores, she didnt even play enough matches to be eligible for post season awards. although Washington will be one of the top players in the country.

I just have trouble not seeing PSU as the favorites. The setting would have to be REALLY, REALLY bad for that to happen, and I can't imagine Rose and Salima can't get at least average production out of someone.

Most people might agree with you but anytime you start a freshman setter (yes she did red-shirt) you are going to see some drop-off. If it is a road match the outcome could go either way against the teams Dorothy mentioned above. Obviously, Nebraska will be a better team this year.

I just think this PSU front line might be one for the ages. 15 years from now we might be remembering the times PSU had Frantti/Washington/Courtney/Whitney on the floor at the same time. The thing that gets me excited is -- they are all hard workers -- I predict every single one of them will be better this year than last year. One or two of them will be a LOT better. For sure there is uncertainty with the setting and backcourt. Without passing, PSU could end up with Texas syndrome. But ... if the passing and setting are merely solid, this front line has an awful lot of ways to get the ball down -- they will be very, very hard to defend. And -- here's where the improvement comes in -- I think they have the potential to be a superb blocking front line. They're all really volleyball-smart and seem to love playing D as much as they do hitting the ball. If they learn how to play great team D and win the scrambles and transitions, well then PSU has what they need to have another very nice season.

I agree that the setting and passing don't need to be exceptional for them to win. If they are "solid" in those areas, they are going to make a run at winning again. I wouldnt say that all the players love playing d as much as they love attacking, as only really one, maybe two of them defend at all.
