Sucks that if they both win their first rounds, Ross/Walsh will play Day/Kessy in the second round.

Not to mention that both of those second round match-ups are on the same side of the draw with St. Pete's winner Barbara/Agatha there as well. Big opening in the top half of the draw.

Walross with a 6 and 10. Looks like they may be a force after all

Considering that team is from Paraguay and has never played in a a world tour event (other than the 2013 worlds where one of them got a 37th), I wouldn't read too much into that.
They advanced by beating a Slovakian team that has never finished higher than 25th in a world tour event.
So again, nice to see them take care of business they way they should, but I think calling them "a force" based on that match is probably a bit optimistic.

I assumed that that team had to be ok because they got off net, but I forgot everyone does in the FIVB

Wow, the bottom bracket is stiff. If Ross/Walsh win next, the will assuredly have to play through either Barbara/Agatha then Maria/Juliana or Talita/Larrissa (or Pavin/Bansley) - these 4 teams are playing best in the world right now...and Wang/Yue, their next match, don't suck...contrast that to the top of the bracket...

And then this, Qatar in its first worlds rolls Doherty/Mayer to 18 in each and it did not feel that close...

So if you were to replace seeds with rankings by current entry points (best 6 of last 8) the remaining women's bracket would look like this: 96 Jul 02 15:00 CC2 Brazil Antonelli-Juliana [3] Brazil Larissa-Talita [1] 95 Jul 02 14:00 CC2 Kazakhstan Mashkova-Tsimbalova [57] Canada Bansley-Pavan [10] 94 Jul 02 14:00 CC4 Canada Humana-Paredes-Pischke [25] Brazil Barbara-Agatha [2] 93 Jul 02 15:00 CC4 USA Ross-Walsh [9] China Wang-Yue [15] 92 Jul 02 12:00 CC3 Russia Ukolova-Birlova [21] Germany Holtwick-Semmler [16] 91 Jul 02 13:00 CC3 USA Fendrick-Sweat [20] Italy Menegatti-Orsi Toth [5] 90 Jul 02 12:30 CC1 Brazil Lima-Fernanda [6] Spain Liliana-Baquerizo [8] 89 Jul 02 13:30 CC1 Netherlands Meppelink-Van Iersel [4] Australia Bawden-Clancy [13] #1, #2, #3, #9, #10, #15, #25, and #57 on one side and #4, #5, #6, #8, #13 #16, #20 and #21 on the other So, a little top heavy with 1, 2 and 3 plus an artificially deflated Walsh/Ross due to April's 25th in St. Pete, but the other side is not that far behind really.

I said after watching Doherty/Mayer in St. Pete that they simply can't compete against most upper tier teams from around the world.... Good thing they got the favorable seeding in this one, or they would have been bounced much sooner.

And then this, Qatar in its first worlds rolls Doherty/Mayer to 18 in each and it did not feel that close... Qatar by way of Rio (Jefferson is Brazilian). And it wasn't that close, Qatar won the first -14, and were up 18-11 in the second before Doherty/Mayer made a last gasp run. Really bad day at the office, getting handled by the 71st ranked team on tour. Day/Kessy go down in two to a solid Chinese team. Day struggled siding out. As for Kerri/April, they took care of business against a poor South American side. What might be more telling in respect to the level of their game right now is the way they handled a good Bansley/Pavan team in the last match of pool. At the same time, I don't know if I see Ross/Walsh running the gauntlet through what will likely be consecutive Brazilian teams in the quarters/semi's.

I said after watching Doherty/Mayer in St. Pete that they simply can't compete against most upper tier teams from around the world.... Good thing they got the favorable seeding in this one, or they would have been bounced much sooner. Much sooner than the first round of elimination? That basically means they would have had to go 0-3 in pool play instead of the 3-0 they went (or 1-2 with a bad set ratio). I think you aren't giving them enough credit for how they played in pool. In a normal tournament I would agree that they aren't going to get out of pool more often than not. But at Worlds there are a ton of teams that don't deserve to be playing. I have a hard time believing there is a single pool that would have gone 0-3 in this week given how they played. Kapa/McHugh and Siderenko/Dyachenko are by no means elite teams, but they are comparable to teams in the other pools they could have faced. It's not like they got to play pushovers. The team they lost to in the elimination round beat Doppler/Horst (who just finished 4th in St. Petersburg) and took Alison/Bruno to 3. So it isn't like they were playing horrible volleyball this week, either (although they did lose in 2 to #47 O'Dea/Watson).

Okay...maybe not "much" sooner. But watching them in St. Pete was painful, and I was cheering for them.....
