"7. Do not forgot coaches have to pay for these nominations, usually out of their pocket, for their players to cover the costs of the plaques etc. Hence why sometimes not every player in the state is nominated." Really? That is wrong. There should be some funding like 1% of the season tournament admissions revenue state wide, or 1% of the take at state, or a donation jar at the state tourney to cover the cost of plaques. At least let the coaches sell prepackaged popcorn at the door on the way out..... Coaches do enough, they should not have to spend their own, or the school's cash on an award. Yep, but it is what it is. The girls coaches association pays for theirs but you have to pay a membership fee to be a part of it and you additionally go to a clinic before the season if you are not a member of the coaches association you can not nominate a player. Same with other sports and their coaches associations. Since we are so different with the boys we do things a little differently. There is no way we could get all the coaches in the state to pay a membership fee for a coaches association when we can only get 20 of them to vote for a top 10, and who knows how many actually rank the officials after each match (those rankings determine who works the state tournament btw. Higher the ranking higher the match they get).

Scotty macgillis on first team.....yikes! A few other questionable picks too There is rumor that MacGillis was POY for Woodland Conf. If true that may have been the reason for first team POY in that conference is questionable with Farrell and Zeske on the same team. Scotty's stats would be incredibly inflated.

Schools should tack $5-10 on to the athletic fee for each player on freshman/JV/varsity and use those funds to reimburse the coach for the cost of awards.

vballman1234, The SEC had 13 teams in it this year. The list seems long because of the fact there were so many teams in it. Congrats to the players named to the All State team. To look at it in a different perspective: There were 57 teams this season with a possible number of players on each team of 15. That totals 855 players. There were 38 players recognized on the all state team. If you were named to an all state recognition that puts you in the top 5% of the players who played for their high school team this season. It is a huge honor, be proud of what you had done this past season. Also for the 8 teams that competed in the State Tournament this year congrats and thank you for another great weekend of volleyball. Best of luck to all the boys trying out this weekend for the club season.

"It is great to see setters recognized - usually they and the liberos are completely under appreciated."
I don't know if I would really agree on this one. My sophomore year the player of the year was the setter from Appleton North and the libber from Burlington got a lot of recognition. My junior year Will Cotter was first team all state and got a lot of recognition. You couldn't really argue against Plaisted, Karl, and Coplan as the top players in that class which explains why Will didn't get much recognition as a player of the year candidate. And last year by the end of the year most of the player of the year talk came down to Wessel and Foley, a setter and libero even with a class filled with some very dominant hitters such as Dalen, Hoppe, Heinen, Klassen. Romano also got a lot of talk last year, another setter. I would agree liberos usually don't get as much recognition usually but setters certainly get their fair share of looks in terms of all state teams.
