Well, tonight is the last day of the 2015 World Cup.
12th place goes to Algeria. They didn't win a set this entire World Cup. We have a playoff tonight for 10th-11th place! Peru vs. Kenya. Would be a huge win for Kenya's program
9th place goes to CUBA unless they can stun South Korea, unlikely. 8th place goes to Argentina, unless South Korea loses to Cuba, if so, flip these two.
7th place goes to Dominican Republic! Unless they beat the United States, they could finish sixth place. 6th place goes to South Korea unless they lose or DR wins, if so, flip these two.
5th place goes to JAPAN! Even if they swept China 3-0, Japan still finishes fifth.
1st-4th Serbia will finish 1st place if Japan beats China, USA would take second place (granted they beat DR). (Russia/China will be 3rd/4th depending on tie breakers)
Serbia will finish 2nd place if China beats Japan, China would take first place. USA likely third , and Russia 4th.
Russia's only hope to qualify (finish 2nd) would be for Japan to beat China 3-0 or 3-1, AND have Dominican Republic take USA to 5 sets, or DR has to beat USA. Longest of long shots.

Unfortunately the plans of achieving the triple crown didn't come true. Team USA was beaten by two of the strongest teams ( Serbia and Russia) at the tournament and struggled a lot against other two strong teams (China and Japan) in order to prevail. Should this be a red flag for us on what's to come in the next olympics?. Would Russ Rose be the one and only capable of achieving such feat?.

AWARDS
MVP - Zhu Ting (CHN)
Best Setter - Niverka Marte (DOM) Best Middle - Daymara Lescay (CUB) Best Middle - Tetori Dixon (USA) Best Outside - Brankcica Mihajlovic (SRB) Best Outside - Tatiana Kosheleva (RUS) Best Opposite - Nataliya Obmocheavea (RUS) Best Libero - Brenda Castillo (DOM)
Huge fan of Dominican Republic and I am stunned Marte got best Setter. Castillo routinely is awarded Best lib, and as deserved, but this tournament I was extremely impressed with Russia's libero.
And I don't want that to seem like I'm bagging on Marte as a setter. I think she has a great tempo with her sets, but wow Best Setter at the World Cup is a big title.
Also not sure about the middle selections. Congrats to Dixon though.

Overall this is not surprising to me, I saw signs of this happening when we were playing China when they were at full strength even before the World Cup. Being the number 1 team in the world doesn't mean you get an easy shot at a gold medal. If you don't rise to the occasion and play your best when it matters you will have less than optimum results. We will have just as much of a chance as any of the other top teams to medal, just depends who we play and how consistent we are, that's the only issue.
