Dalhausser/Lucena beat Schalk/Saxton(CAN) 23-21, 21-12 Austrians drop out. Looks like one win could put them in second in the pool.

Top 3 of 5 make it on to the next round of single elim. Matches left for Dalhausser/Lucena are Netherlands, Brazil, and Austria, so no free passes. Winning the pool is huge as it saves an extra match and gurantees a semi-final spot. I believe Austria just retired from that single match, assuming they will bet back in action for tomorrow.

If you forfeit a match because you are injured that should be the tournament for you. 3 of 5? Why does the FIVB hate making people earn things? Really interested to see how they do against the Dutch

It's not single elimination. A forfeit in pool play is simply a loss. If Doppler/Horst can play, why would you want the FIVB to disqualify them? Don't you want the other teams to have to earn a win?

Looks like Rich Lambourne is streaming a bunch of these on periscope(with commentary). I guess he'll be doing the ones tomorow as well. If you go to www.periscope.tv/richyusa you can click on and re-watch the various matches from today on the left hand side.

My feeling is it gives the team to whom they forfeit a big advantage by not having to win and getting a huge point differential. Did you go today?

Well they did play a set and a third before the injury. If you kick them out for that, it would actually give the other 3 teams in the pool more of an advantage. Anyway, going down tomorrow for two days...not crazy about the format, but hope to catch some good matches.

Winning the pool is huge as it saves an extra match and gurantees a semi-final spot. Did they change the format? It was originally top two advance to a cross-over semifinal (2nd in Pool A vs 1st in Pool B and vice versa). When did it change to top 3 advance? EDIT: I see on the FIVB site that it appears to be set up that way. That's awful in my opinion. What is the point of doing a full round robin in 5 team pools if you are going to still let 60% of the teams into single elimination?

I was there yesterday for Day 1. Couple points of interest. Court 2 which actually was supposed to have some good matches was deemed unplayable 15 minutes before the first match. They were working on it all day I am assuming to get it ready for today. Also it didn't seem like people were really ready for people to show up. I pretty much walked passed a gate that was to block the entrance to the stadium court to get in, because the first match of the day had already begun. The Gibb/Patterson vs Italy match was simple. Lupo sided out very easy and also sprinkled in some 2 balls to Nicolai. Nicolai had a couple of aces and some blocks and that was the ball game. It seemed as soon as Gibb/Patterson got down they were not able to make any type of plays. I will be going back on Thursday or Day 3 to watch some more. Hopefully court 2 will be up so they have more options to watch matches.

I watched Nick/Phil yesterday (thanks Rich Lambourne!) as well as the Xiamen finals. Nick's new haircut seems to be paying dividends, as he is playing great. He was practically error free both days, and having great vision and decisions on his sideout play. To me Phil is looking like his old self as well.

Question on the event - do they check you bags when you walk in etc.? Can you walk in with a "red solo cup"? Can you bring water in? I will be there tomorrow...

Im not going to complain too much because I love the format as compared to the normal FIVB one, but why couldnt they have just done a real round robin with the top 3 teams advancing, ala the old Curervos. I think 11 matches in five days wouldnt have been a problem for teams and for most it would only be 9.
Id like to see more events like this, maybe a few spread out over the season. We dont get to see top teams play each other enough

The FIVB page looks goofy and says Phil/Nick haven't played yet at all in the tournament. Biggest competitive tournament and they can't even update that? Is there anywhere else that shows what is happening in the tournament?

Yes they check your bags, but depending on who you meet they give you very different answers. No umbrella's yet I saw umbrella's in the stadium court. No bottles or Cans, yet people had bottles and cans. They wanted everyone to have drinks in a cup from what it looked like yet a lot of the vendors were not providing cups. So it was kind of a mess from that standpoint. It was fun to watch international play though. I always wanted to see teams from outside the US and it certainly made it fun to watch.
