16-11. This is happening. Seriously. Misty is beating the no. 1 US team

She is beating them, but they are not the #1 US team. Regardless, there is no way that this should happen!

19-14. Misty's shots are awesome when Jen/Emily drop. They'd almost do better to not block at all. This is a two game rout. If they win this tournament there is no way Misty doesnt come back right?

Thats game. 21-17, 21-17. Great win for Bristy and really nice for Brittany especially. Misty will get all the praise but Brittany played some excellent volleyball, blocking, chasing etc.

I'm genuinely curious why you were "never a huge Misty fan"? Over-rated talent-wise, attitude, character, off-the court behavior? Mostly the way the media covered her. The "best sideout player in the world" thing that commentators used to push annoyed me and was obviously false (since she got served all the time). I found a lot of the interviews she and Kerri used to give very fake, but most of all I was, and am, a huge Elaine Youngs fan. Well, the EY fan explains everything, but I must ask you this - If you found interviews of May & Walsh to be fake, how did you feel about EY's whole "I'm better than any other player out there" interview(s)? I didn't mind EY, but for someone that was clearly the third best player in the US at the time, she sure talked a lot of smack.

Kerri/April are at the top(obviously when KW healthy), but I would also put April/whoever(Fopma) in the #1 spot at the moment. Would arguably put Fendrick/Sweat ahead of them as well, based on FIVB finishes.

April and Kerri of course if healthy

She didnt act like she was just a part of a great big sorority or that she would be equally happy if one of her BFFs, who were all the other players, won instead of her. If Kerri and Misty gave honest interviews they would have sounded a lot like EY. Im not really blaming them since fans, unfairly, expect their female players to not act overly competitive. Also I dont think EY was clearly the third best. For the later years sure, but in the early years, I think she was very comparable to Misty. Kerri was head and shoulders above anyone in my mind. BTW lets not all pretend that a lot of the hate EY got wasnt directly related to her lifestyle.

I see your point somewhat, BUT, I always liked that Misty & Kerri let their results speak for them, and nothing else really. They never had to prove anything to anyone, unlike EY who couldn't talk publicly without speaking passive aggressively about M & K. And sorry, but no matter what point you compare their careers, Misty is always greater than EY.

On the other hand, EY would not say that about Kerri. Not buying into very many people caring about EY's "lifestyle." People didn't like EY because: One, she's kind of an ass*^le; Two, she dared to rip America's sweetheart, Six Feet of Sunshine. And again, she'd be the first to admit it. To be fair, though, EY can be damn funny in the rare times she isn't she isn't angry. As for Misty, I'm amazed (although maybe I shouldn't be) at how she's playing so far. Last time I saw her, she was losing to a pair of high school girls - really good high school girls, but still. She looks like she's in a bit better shape now, and she's just so damn smart on the court.

The discrimination against lesbians and women perceived as masculine has been a long term part of BVB coverage in this country and particularly in mainstream commentary. Odd that every time Misty/Kerri played you had Matt Treanor and the overtly obnoxious Casey Jennings shoved down your throat. Who was EY with again? Ever hear Holly's old partnership with Reno dissected when she and EY played together? How that affected them? Just from watching AVP events, I knew a large part of Holly's romantic history. Fro, Bacil, Armato. And yet when EY's relationship actually affects the tour its completely ignored?

And I'm not quite sure where you're going with the media stuff. For one, very few - if any - gay players wanted that kind of publicity at the time. Today? Not so much - I just saw an article yesterday about a U.S. soccer team member marrying her girlfriend, and there have been many others. Just not a big deal in 2015. Would it be a surprise today to hear an announcer mention Branagh's wife and baby? Not to me. But in the 80's, 90's,even the Ought's? Publicly, everybody stayed in the closet, and the media was happy to go along with it. But that was a general societal issue in America, and far from specific to beach volleyball. No gay player that I can think of - and there were a large number of them - ever had opportunities taken away from them because of their orientation. As for fans at the events, while I'm sure there were some who would root against a lesbian just because, I never really saw or heard much of that. Hell, beach volleyball crowds have probably been among the most tolerant out there, since gay players have been major stars pretty much since the inception of pro beach volleyball.
