So you concede that there was both societal and media prejudice against lesbians and women perceived as masculine, but deny it affected Elaine at all? How does that work?
They never had opportunities taken away from them? First of all that simply isn't true. But lets say it is, weren't those opportunities contingent on them keeping their mouths shut? On them acting as if they were embracing traditional gender roles? Weren't those opportunities largely awarded based on perceived feminine characteristics? That is having opportunities taken away. There have always been two sets of standards applied to female players.
Things are better now, no question, but they are far from ideal. Current media darling Ronda Rousey got a pass when she made nasty bigoted remarks about two prospective rivals based on their perceived masculinity. Maria Sharapova outearns Serena because she is perceived as more feminine. Abby Wambach versus Mia Hamm. We like, and pay for, female athletes that arent too muscley or butch. Maybe thats one reason EY was always pissed off?
Id also point out that if current results hold your prediction about Nicole's prospects as a contender also seems to have been wrong.

Nicole's prospects as a contender for what? I don't remember making any comments about her recently, you'd have to direct me to them. I'm certainly not surprised she and Jenny are competitive on the current edition of the AVP (notwithstanding getting slaughtered 15-6 in the 3rd by April/Jen).
Anyway, of course homophobia was and still is an issue at a macro level. And do good looking, charismatic athletes get lots of endorsements? Of course (although Serena ain't hurting when it comes to off the court earnings). But your complaint was that much of the "hate" for EY was based on her sexual orientation. Specific to the beach volleyball community (players, fans, media, sponsors, promoters), I disagree. So Marlowe, Karch, Sinjin etc didn't mention her love life on the air - not seeing that as any kind of conspiracy. They all certainly praised her to the skies for her athleticism and talent. She had plenty of prime sponsors (Nautica, Oakley, Herbalife, Hilton). She did not get the same endorsement opportunities as Misty and Kerri, but that's the difference between winning Gold and Bronze.
She didn't have as big a fan base as Misty/Kerri, but that was more about how popular the others were. But Elaine also set herself up as the "villain" (at times deliberately) or the "anti-Kerri" with her comments and actions. And in my mind, that's the basic reason for any antipathy thrown her way by beach fans. But lets not pretend there weren't a substantial number of Team EY fans either.

lol - Sharapova out-earned Serena not because she's more feminine that's simplistic 1) as to feminine appearances, hell - Serena's much more curvy, granted Sherapova had the more 'feminine' face - but then femininity is in the eye of the observer - lol, straight or gay 2) Serena is BLACK - that explains a lot about the earnings (a totally different issue than being feminine) 3) Sherapova had more international & racial appeal 4) the Williams' dad didn't exactly make the family image very marketable early in the Williams career - they had the whole us vs. the country club thing image (even if they didn't really practice in Compton)

I was watching the replay of the match and Misty was reading and predicting where they would hit it pretty well and they were afraid of Brittanys block which helped.

I just love her court IQ With her fitness level right now, the modern small court is also helping, if it was the old court they woulda been in more trouble too much space.

I actually found myself sneaking in some of Misty May Treanor's matches today at a kids birthday party. I truly wanted to see how she did and OMG--She's played great. I believe this was her first time playing competitively in several years and her and her partner were rolling through teams. It just isn't fair for someone to be that good. Kerri is in the same category... both of them are literally the best ever and when they play together--forget about it... Do I smell a Rio trip in the works? ?

I was in Seattle yesterday and I can tell you Misty can still play. She was amazing. Her passing was so dead on and she could hit shots to the back court at will. She read every move Emily and Jen tried to make. No Rio trip because she doesn't have enough tournies to qualify. I do not know what will happen today but no matter what Misty had a great tourney.

Phil/Nick have a zero tourney count as well, so it is still possible!

Im really interested to see this. I think Summer Lane will win if they can keep their nerve. This will be their second look at Misty and this is Misty's third straight day playing on old legs that haven't practiced much.
Misty is going to dig some balls, Summer and Lane just need to keep playing. Wouldnt be surprised to see them fold again though

They were scoring more points serving Brittany though, maybe Misty's setting who knows.

Long rallies going the other way today. Id like to see Bristy get close enough to put pressure on the young girls but its late in the game now

This is going to end up looking like a beating, and it was to an extent, but in Game 2, there were 3-4 plays that could have gone either way to change things. I like how Summer has been aggressive with two balls and swinging in transition.

Oof. That was a beatdown. Even if Misty/Brit turned some plays around, it was still going to be a -16, -17 loss.
